Title: HO Shay to On30?
Post by: Anubis on February 03, 2010, 05:21:40 PM
Hello all,

I have a Bachmann HO 3-truck Shay that I acquired several years ago, and which has had very little use (less than half an hour).

I am thinking of bashing it into a (small) On30 runner, by replacing the cab, smokestack, and sand domes, as I have already done with some older 00 and HO 0-4-0 locomotives.

Has anyone else ever attempted anything like this conversion, and what are your views?

Sir - there is a company in the USA that actually makes a kit to do this and it builds into a very convincing small Shay.

I'll try and find it for you...

Meanwhile, have a look at this great Australian site and weep!!

Hey fellas,

Many thanks for the link to Boulder Valley and their On30 conversion kit.

Looks like it will do the job nicely, as well as saving me a pile of hassles.

What a great bunch you all are! ;)

Hey Anubis,

you can even do a conversion by using brass parts from PSC or any other kind of kitbash-able material: I´ve done a conversion by using Bill Banta´s On30 cab for the HO shay, did produce a tender water tank from two Bachmann Oil tanks which came unused from my Bachmann 2-8-0 Connies, a stack from Xerodon and a bit of plastic sheet material.

It´s not difficult. Almost prototypical.
I´ll see if I can add a photo here.

;) ;) ;)Cheers, Tom ;) ;) ;)
