I am new to modeling, so I'd have to say whatever is cheapest for right now.  But if I had a choice, I would probably model Great Northern, Denver & Rio Grande, Southern Pacific, or Texas & Pacific, depending on whether steam or deisel.

I'm building the Blue Ridge Sub-division of the Alleghany Division of the Virginia Tidewater and Piedmont with the C&O having trackage rights.  Ever so often the layout will shift about 1000 miles west for the Milwaukee Road.
OTOH, I have freight cars from almost every Class One railroad running in 1957.

I have a freelanced northeast corridor pseudo-layout with Amtrak, Conrail, Penn Central, and one lost Norfolk and Western E33(It was a great price!) I've also contemplated putting in a modified Pittsurgh PCC car (They were the first trains I ever rode on), but it's ended up in the same fanciful coner of my mind as kitbashing a Milwaukee Road electric.

Hi Tom,

I model Illinois Central late steam and a few early 'Green Diamond' diesels. That would make my modeling era from the 1940s to the mid to late 1950s.

It's pretty hard for me not to be impressed by locomotives like this one:

My layout is basically designed so I can sit and watch trains run, with two large yards ... one a 'storage' yard and passener terminal, the other (still being built) an industrial switching area.

I get my biggest enjoyment out of 'kit bashing' and 'detailing' ICRR steam (there are very few accurate ICRR steam locomotives out there, and the few brass models that exist are way beyond my budget). I also do a little with IC diesel, but not much. I also enjoy building my 'rolling stock' from craftsman kits ... styrene and resin.

I've pretty much sold off all my 'shake the box' or 'ready to run' kits and slowy am replacing them with stuff that is 'craftsman kit' quality (except for my passenger trains of which I have an ICRR streamlined pulled by an 'E' unit diesel and an ICRR older style passenger train that will be pulled by either a 4-8-2 or a 4-6-2 (when those locomotives get kit bashed to ICRR standards).

Here's a laser wood craftsman kit (AMB) of an ICRR caboose I built:

I currently operate DC analog rather than DCC and this summer I hope to finish my layout and 'rewire' everything so two trains can be running on the mainlines while switching is going on in the large yards.

Here's a couple of photos of two HO model ICRR locomotives on my layout ... one is a resin kit completed (a very early diesel) and the other is an ICRR 2-8-0 steamer which is in the process of being completed.

This is an HH660 of which the ICRR had a very few when first built in the 1930s.

This is an ICRR Consolidation ... I have the pilot truck removed while doing final detailing and smoothing, before sanding.

lanny nicolet

My next 'kit bash' steam project will be a 4-8-2 from a Spectrum Heavy 4-8-2 or an IHC 4-8-2.

A fellow T&P modeler!  ;D

As you may have guessed, I model a freelanced, obscure segment of the Texas & Pacific on which Mopac ( partial owner of the T&P) and Southern Pacific (via trackage rights) are seen on its tracks.  My fictional branch also interchanges with the Santa Fe.

I model the Camino, Placerville and Lake Tahoe Railroad. I have an Athearn S-12, a Bachmann 70T, A bachmann 3 truck shay, an Athearn GP-7, and an Athearn GP-38-2, all dcc equiped and painted for the CPLT. There is also an IHC mike, a mantua 0-4-0, and a mantua 0-4-0t, all awaiting decoders and CPLT paint.  The actual CPLT only had two 44 tonners and two 3 truck shays, but for my purposes, it was much bigger. Soon, I will be getting a 44 tonner from Bachmann and adding dcc (whenever I can find the money). There are also a few SP locos that will eventually work their way onto my layout, but that might be a while away.

I model the Rock Island as it ran from Memphis through Little Rock and on to Oklahoma City.  Currently I am building the Choctaw station in Little Rock out of DPM components.  The original station is part of the Clinton Library complex in Little Rock.

I am trying to replicate the late steam/early diesel era with a touch of Missouri Pacific and Kansas City Southern.  My motive power consists of E-8s, F-7s and RS-3s with a newly acquired Proto 1000 RDC-3. I'm also developing a ficticional subsidiary of the Rock Island named the Central Arkansas.  It's composed of early heavy weight passenger cars and box cars not to exceed 40'.  These are pulled by Bachmann 4-6-0s and 2-8-0s.

Currently everything is DC, but I plan to convert over to DCC later on this year.

I'm modeling the NKP's Peoria Division between Gibson City and Bloomington, Illinois, circa 1949. As such most of my motive power consists of NKP 2-8-2s, 2-8-4s, and the occasional 4-6-2 and 2-8-0. I model two connections with the IC, so I'll have their 2-8-0s and 2-8-2s as well. I also model the P&E (which was a subsidiary of the NYC) so I have examples of their 0-6-0s, 2-8-2s, 4-8-2s and 4-6-2s. I ALSO model a connection with both the Wabash and GM&O, so I have one of each road's 2-8-2s. The roster for the "operations" side of my layout runs to 40 engines or so.

And then there's the collection. I'm a fan of the C&IM and TP&W, so I have the raw material sitting around to eventually model at least six of their engines. As a fan of the NKP, I also have examples of most of the steam that they ever rostered, including stuff that never ran west of Ohio (like the 2-6-6-2s and heavy 2-8-2s) and their Hudsons. I've got a pretty large pile of old Mantua engines from my old freelanced line, now without a job. Finally, I'm starting to slowly pick up Bachmann 4-4-0s and 4-6-0s, and IHC 2-6-0s, for the eventual time that I'm able to run 1914 period op sessions. The collection runs to 70-85 engines.

I model CSX, Conrail, and my Shortline Eastern Maryland. (I dont model any era so my equipment is very mixed)

For CSX I actually model Western Maryland, Since I run about any era It ranges from WM steam era equipment to modern CSX (my oldest loco is a WM 2-10-0 russian decapod, the newest is a CSX SD70m)

Conrail isnt much but a SD-60 and a few freight cars.

Eastern Maryland is my fictional shortline. It runs not only freight but local passenger trains ( I wont allow amtrak on my layout  ;D ). They also run an NG (hon3) tourist train. The loco roster is pretty simple, A RTA (chicago) F40ph (kato), A  NH RS-2 (proto) and a CB&Q GP-7 (also proto  :) ) do the freight work. There is also a Bachmann Doodlebug that makes an apperance here and there on an excursion. As for NG its a lone K-27 (soundtraxx) My layout is on the east coast but EM allows me to run equipment from all across the US (since all the locos are second hand) ;D

I live on a ranch (now retired) , layouts in progress, one room 12 x 9, adjoining (under construction) 12 x 12 , main layout is Union Pacific Axial Basin coal and freight (Northwest Colorado) in HO modern diesel,  second layout Narrow Gauge Circle (Blackhawk,Central City). D&RGW (Bumble Bee , my wife's set) and Rio Grande South,  Colorado Southern  ( line now called Leadville Colorado Southern).  Narrow gauge all Bachmann ON30, passenger and early freight/mining/logging.   Colorado Mining Co (Baldwin outside frame 2-8-0) , early Santa Fe (first train into Longmont/Denver), Central Pacific Jupiter and UP 119 (Promontory Point).

For the UP roster, rolling stock includes road names acquired by UP.
1981 Western Pacific
1982  Missouri Pacific
1988  Missouri Kansas Texas (Katy)
1995 Chicago N Western
1996 Southern Pacific
1996  D&RGW  ( coal hoppers)
1996  SSW,   Cotton Belt , Western Services
Various lease stock such as GATX , Winchester Western.
UP runs through our ranch, have observed all names above except Katy.  Many of them have the UP shield added, preserving the original name and number.

I've always been interested in the following roads and model them as much as budget allows:
1. Pennsy because my grandfather was a fireman for the PRR
2. NYC because they passed thru my hometown
3. Monon because I'm originally from Indiana
4. C&O/B&O/N&W because they have some really interesting steam power
5. And 1 NKP Berkshire 'cuz I like 2-8-4's

Now, if you want to know what prototype roadname locomotives I model, then that's a different question.

o yea,

I model mostly freelence anything I like
Most of my Rolling Stock is Gorre and Daphetid Cars--about 300 somewhat of those

and then theres my locos I kitbash

a mantua 2-6-6-2 with a UP big Boy Boiler cropped down

an AHM 20th century limited 4-6-4, modified and repainted red and black

a 0-8-0+0-6-2  a bachmann 2-8-0 converted into helper, or fast freight with an MDC chassis under the tender

A Rivarossi 0-8-0 with feedwater heater removed and tender replaced with a mantua slopeback tender

a mantua 4-6-2(found this for $20 bucks in some random antique shop) currently awaiting the modification torch

an AHM 4-8-8-2 cab forward undergoing a recovery modification after a cliff-fall from a 300 foot(think in scale lol) and will be converted into a 4-8-2 cab forward with a 0-8-0 chassis awaiting a ideal destiny

another mantua 2-6-6-2 chassis missing the main weight system and motor and other key parts is on hold with a modified hudson boiler to go on it, to give it a semi chunky NYC mallet look to it

a bachmann reading boiler undergoing diagnostics with brass machinery and domes put aside as the plastic embedded piping is being peeled off, this loco is being prepped to reincarnate G&D #34

and more and more lol, I'm a steam loco junkie

basicly I model a poly-design layout that is always deconstucting and reconstructing itself(is uses Power-loc track and modified power-loc track) which is always a christmas display at rockwell pavilion in Bristol CT during a week in December(which is currently in development stage(I want to do something different each year))

Lets say my parents spoiled me with too much train stuff, BUT the upside is I got alot of hands on learning experience with model railroading alone, I scored extremely high on the ASVAB(I even fell asleep for part of the test lol) and all the armed services were trying to get my attention and I've recently signed on for the Air Force, because they can give me the most for my needs in life

You could say I lead a huge life, my modeling life is an escape from the real world where everybody likes to talk to me(girls are fun :P) but being  popular isn't what its all cut out to be..... But the key thing is I'm a good-natured person and that's all that counts :D

Gene, you're correct in your assumption about the ASVAB!  Just fill in the blanks, fill in the little circles, etc!

ryeguyisme,  Congrats on the high ASVAB score!  I am in the Air Force and have been for over 26 years!  The ASVAB scores for the Air Force generally run higher for AFSC's than do the Army.  My compliments to you.  However, Gene is quite correct, you will write far more in the Air Force than you do now and  peoples careers and lives may depend on how and what you write!  You may not understand it now but in four or five years, you will!

Stephen, I was army for 27 years, and you are absolutely correct.  Once you become an NCO your ability to write clearly and correctly is very, very important.  I remember the difficulty I had as a battery commander when the NCO effiency reports first started.  I had to deal with correcting "Sergeant Bilko does good work," a lot.  But they got better.   :D

East and West United States, with Chicago as the central points in 3 different eras:

1930's-50's
PRR, NYC, B&O, C&O, N&W, UP, GN, CB&Q, AT&SF

1960's-80's
Penn Central, Chessie System, Conrail, Amtrak, N&W, UP, AT&SF, BN

1990's-2000's
CSX, NS, UP, BNSF, Amtrak

Those are the main RR's of every era, but (of course) there will be, for example, Conrail locos in the 90's-00's era and PRR/NYC/B&O/C&O locos during the 60's-80's era.

The best part is: construction hasn't begun yet! ;) :D ;D ::) :P

I freelance a medium-to-big city transit system, leaning heavily on the Philadelphia Transportattion Co. (PTC), for trolley, and trackless trolley operations, and the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT), for the subway-elevated line. It's an inner city layout, set between 1960, and 1980.

 Interesting topic. Having just got back into RRing I am having a bit of a worry over a suitable road name. My loco roster so far is;
1x 2-6-6-2  Bachmann artic
1x 2-6-6-2  Mantua artic with tender
1x  4-8-4     Bachmann Niagra
2x  small   0-6-0  swithers of unknown origin
About sixty pieces of rolling stock, 1930's to mid 50's,(Roundhouse & Athearn) with a good number of coal hoppers, box cars, flats etc. The road name that I have arrived at is "Pacific Southern" and I hope this will put me in the right geographical location for a coal and timber RR. If I'm completely off the tracks here, give me some pointers.  Cheers KiwiRob.

I'd go Atlantic Southern or Gulf Southern.   Try a road going from the coal and timber fields of West Virginia and Kentucky to New Orleans or Charleston, SC.

The Grizzly Northern Railway (GNRy) is a fictional 1930's/1940's era CPR subsidiary that runs through the Rockies, Selkirks and Monashees,  between Rocky Mountain House in Alberta and Kamloops in British Columbia.
Current motive power (CPR and GNRy road names): an 0-8-0, four 2-8-0's four 2-10-0's, a 2-10-2, a 2-6-6-2, a three-truck Shay and a gas electric "Doodle Bear", all Spectrum except the 0-8-0 Proto.
In the real world the Grizzly Northern runs on the flatlands of the local club .

Not living in the USA and having the vast experience of having visited Miliwaukee exactly once on business I decided to change from German models to US.
I chose BN because I liked the Green & Black F units.
I then back dated to merger priod so I could collect all the member colour schemes. It was prototypical according to the BN journal I bought, but boy did it look toy like.
So I back dated to CB&Q the only decals I could get locally.

Now I have standardised on the Bachmann 4-6-0 as my stock Loco and regardless of if it is prototypical or not they all have CB&Q insignia.
BUT, they run great, look just as good and I am as happy as a kitten with a ball of string.
So, I guess the answer is in my case CB&Q but it does not matter.
Chose something, decal them all the same so they look consistant and have fun.

I model the Illinois Central RR during the 1940s ... and stretch it into the very late 1950s so that a few black, 'green diamond' diesels are not out of place running with ICRR steam. I also have an imaginary 'connection' with the 'Fort Dodge, Des Moines, & Southern RR' shortline.

Rye Guy, regarding your post showing my partially finished ICRR #908 2-8-0, here is the finished model. The prototype photo you posted from Steam Town is indeed an ICRR 2-8-0 but I think it is a #700 series ICRR Connie ... they had smaller drivers, were smaller locomotives and had some significant differences from the #900 series that I am modeling (Best wishes on your air force career.)

I model the mythical Phenix City,Seaboard and Southern Railway. This regional road is jointly owned by CSX and Norfolk Southern. It is a contemporary road, and power from both parent companies is typically run. Run through trains from both the Union Pacific and BNSF are common sights as well. Passenger service is sponsored by AMTRAK, but consists of upgraded 1950's ears locomotives and rolling stock. This is somewhat encouraged by our Canadian neighbor's current practices. In summary, this arrangement allows me to run  a variety of motive power and rolling stock in a typically space short environment. Much fun though.
