Title: Spectrum EMD F40PH Diesel #208 Amtrak

Recently inherited some trains and am new to this field. Do you know if this unit is dcc ready or not?

Look at the diagram that came with the loco or open it up and see if there is a PC board that would have a eight pin connector on it.

No, it's not. However, Kato makes a plug in
DCC ready F40PH. There are several on ebay
right now.

The Bachmann F40PH is very similar internally to the Bachmann Baby Trainmaster.  Details of how to added a decoder to the latter can be found here:

An easy way to tell if the Bachmann F40's are DCC ready, is to flip them over and look at the fuel tank. If its screwed on, its DC only....however, if its clipped on, its most likely DCC ready.
