I have several leftover oem decoders from my bachmann engines and i was wondering if it would a good or bad idea to use them in my caboose for lighting?

Why not.  You can use them in your passenger cars as well.

slack-

They would be perfect for a caboose. You could control
interior lights or even marker lights.

Another good use for old decoders is buildings I have a Miners shack with a Porch light, interior light, and an outhouse with a light, I used and old smoke generator that I connected the throttle to so I can have a little or a lot of smoke come out the chimney and I can turn the differant lights on and off as I please.
