Would it be possible to turn a Bachmann On30 IF 4-4-0 into an 8-18c 4-4-0. I don't know if it's possible, but it looks as a if you shortened the back head up a little it could be molded into one. I am aware that the motor is back there, but could that also be moved.

I'm pretty sure the Bachmann model is too small. The 8-18c is listed on Wikipedia as having 42" drivers and 12" x 16" cylinders. The correct size drivers in 1/48 scale would measure 7/8" in diameter, and while I don't have a 4-4-0 at hand to measure, my memory is that it's wheels are significantly smaller. May if you were to change scales, you could get a little closer, as HMinky suggested with his 1/55 scale experiments, but I suspect it still wouldn't be all that near to the correct proportions.

Dusten, The Bachmann IF 4-4-0 backdates into a nice little engine.I have seen some nice models built by some friends,just pick up a PSC catalog and go for it. Should look nice with the new 18' cars.I am now modeling a small narrow gauge in North Carolina and these new 18' box cars are close to the Cairo & Kanawha.

I'm sorry Roy, but I am a bad rivet counter haha. When I got my ten wheelers the 1st thing I did was deck out the cab to a more prototypical setting, as well as a few other things. Though I will still get one of the little beauties because they're "dare I say" ""cute"". Though I will make the cab look a lot better. I don't like how open it is in the back, it being a deckless cab engine.

Dusten,The mogul is a deckless cab and on mine I used a xacto knife and carefully scored the lines of the doors and opened my cab door front and rear.I have seen photos where it looks as if the crew just removed the doors.

When I say decked out the cab I removed the back head parts (throttle, injectors, gauges etc) and moved them to a more appropriate locations that were prototypical. I made some new injectors out of wire, and made brake handles and etc. It looks good. I'll show pictures later

Have you seen the latest On30 Annual? There are a couple of excellent bashes using the 4-4-0, and the one by Bill Iwan [sp?] does have more of that "western" look. Looks like the main ingredient is a wood cab from Mount Blue, and they list the PSC parts.

Off the OP's topic, but I especially like the boxcab in Carsten's 2013 0n30 Annual. It's built on a Bachmann H0 45 ton chassis using a sheet of Evergreen styrene, some Grandt Line & Precision Scale parts, and a few bits of wire. The eight wheel pickup should ensure excellent performance!
Mine will be the base switcher for a U.S. Navy installation where some (actually 2) PBY aircraft are stationed. I really like the totally business-like design along with the 40s / 50s look. Perfect for a government owned locomotive!

Dusten,Porter made a great deal of small locomotives to include the 4-4-0.I think the 2-4-0 was more the pouplar choice for logging and contractors(see lastest Gazette with Mal Ferrell).This was meant to be a ..What if and not a dead on rivet counter.,the engine would be right at home pulling the new 18' freight cars and remember not everyone has space to run the large engines. ;D

a perfect 4-4-0 for 0n30 is shown in the gazette Mar/Apr 2013. It's the "Surry, Sussex & Southampton" No. 1. The engine is only a little bit longer than the Bachmann 4-4-0 but has bigger wheels and a bigger superstructure. A very wonderful engine.
