All I had to do to make them bigger, (I use netscape), is to Rt click on the image and a menu box comes up and then Lt click on view image.

Its just a problem with the default configuration of the forum..looks like it was "factory set" to resize photos to 250 pixels wide, which is much smaller than necessary..

Hopefully the Bach-man or the board webmaster can re-set that default to 640 pixels wide..250 is just too small, and 640 pixels wide fits in messages nicely, and are big enough to show detail, but not TOO big.
640 is basically the "internet forum standard" for discussion forums everywhere.  some are even larger. somewhere between 640 to 800 pixels is reasonable.

Hi all,

While I'm gathering parts for my Spectrum 2-8-0 kit bash to an ICRR 2-8-0, I've been doing some kit building. Here are two photos of an AMB "Iowa division" caboose and one shot of an resing kit ICRR box car which will wait until sprint to be painted.

The roundhouse is a large Walthers kit with 3 more stalls. the tape was to hold the doors closed while I worked on it

Very nice work on the roundhouse and the snowplow! Wish I had room for even a small roundhouse on my layout.

Years ago I built some Ambroid, etc. wood 'craftsman kits'. Once in awhile I see a Labelle or Ambroid come up for auction on eBay. What's your opinion of the detail of those wood kits vs. some of the 'craftsman' style kits available today?

Here's my latest kit ... a Branchline Blueprint REA 1953 built reefer for my ICRR "Land 'O Corn" daily, Chicago to Souix City. Branchline Blueprint kits have enough detail parts to keep any 'fine scale' modeler happy.

only if Frank brings it to the store where he works. He is the pro painter and it's my brothers engine. Stan owns Despatch Junction and runs it with Frank's help. The train wreck was at the next overpass east of the building.

Scot, did you do anything special to get the larger size?

I’d like to show a Pike Stuff “Trucker Motel” I bashed. I got a lot of mileage out of this little kit because it is a corner piece. I thought it might end up as a coal mine, but I guess it ended up being THE BRAKEMAN HOTEL after all.

I got this brand new Conrail Geep for 20 bucks when a LHS went belly up. Shoot, the decoder is worth that much. I added a few details and weather it best I could. It makes for a sturdy trim engine.

No I'm not releated, but I stand in great respect for the master of night train photography.

I wish that I had come up with that shot on my own,  I'ts actually a re-creation of O Winston Links photo of the N & W Y6 2143 on the Sheffers Crossing Turntable.  The Durango & Silverton wanted something different for the Winter Photo Special and I jumped on the chance to try my hand at the masters work.  The extra shoot on Saturday night (before Sundays Photo Special), Gave the photogs a real treat to create their own photo of one of the great train shots of Mr.Link.   "The Last Steam Railroad In America", O. Winston Link, (Pg. 23)

The Durango & Sliverton RR went way overboard to make this happen.  We are planning another night shoot for the "Fall Photo Special"

Very nice. I am a fan of the D&RGWRR. I've never seen one running in person, but I have seen them and gotten in the K-28 at the musuem.

Here is some of my work.

I figure since this is the bachmann forums, that is is apporpriate i post a picture of my greatest Bachman engine, my 44ton switcher.  True, others have better detail, or look nicer, but this little engine is the only engine that can fit in my tight industrial center with the modern cars.

Good Morning All,

       I have seen nice work posted in this thread and want to say "Great Job All."    However,  I noticed something that we do as a group.   We tend to post close up shots of things,  trying to get that "real look".   I think it would be great if some of us could post a more broad look at our railroads,  to give everyone a feel for what the railroad looks like.   To that thought,  here is a picture of the mainyard area on my On30 railroad.   Now the pic is a bit outdated as there have two more stub end sidings added to the bottom of the picture since it was taken.
      I am going to try to get some more pix taken in the next week or so and give you a feel for what my railroads look like overall.

Bob,

I got quite a chuckle out of the 'little stinker' sneaking up on the rail fan. Great modeling touches that really add interest to a very nicely sceniced layout. Keep up the great work! That's quite a yard you are building, Bob!

GG, I think Steve's blood pressure is now low enough for me to say that I enjoyed your 'snow bound' photos of the GP30. However, had that been an IC 2-10-2 or 4-8-2 I might also have had a blood pressure attack :-)

CAB_IV, your modeling is looking good! Some nice shots. This is a nice thread and an 'inspiring one' as well.

these 2 are an sd40 from athearn, [that i bought undecorated] and the gp 40 started life as a UP gp40 from bachmann,  both got the CSX paint job,  i was very happy with the results,  only had to touch up 2 places, lol.

  this is a corner of my layout  ,  sort of an ''industrial area'',  stock kits and some scratchbuilt stuff,  it keeps getting re-done for some odd reason, ;)....maybe someday ill get it the way i like it.

I'm just getting mine going as far as scenery is concerned. Like I said before....I'm a car nut.....so my first attempts may be a bit amateurish. Please feel free to offer tips and ideas.....I'm like a sponge right now soaking up all the new material I am reading.

This is one of the far back corners of my layout. While I still have "belly clearance" I felt I should get these corners attended to first. ;D

The shack is an old plastic kit as is the shed......I am scratchbuilding the fire watch tower and experimenting with photoshop to create the cupola (cabin). I print the walls out and glue them to thin balsa or plywood veneer, then assemble the 4 walls.

its looking good there bear, one  thing i learned about corners, try not to make it so deep that you have to climb up on the layout or a ladder to reach the back wall......my back corners are just about 6 inches too deep and if i want to change something i have to use a small step ladder,  also, i put several large trees in the front of my layout and now when i reach across to the back...i uproot 2 or 3 every time  lol     small trees or shrubbery might be a better idea if youll be reaching across them a lot.   

  i like your sub-roadbed, the radii look great....i wish i had done that in a couple places.

  dont worry about being an amateur.....im a amateur [with a few yrs. experience] too!  lol   its all about learning, asking questions and trying whatever you think MIGHT work.

Since this is in the 'general' board, I'm going to assume that our 'work' doesn't have to be models. So- Here it is...

These pictures are from my Eagle project, where we took this S-2 and scraped all the crud off then painted it (the ALCo, not the crud).

Just started this two sat ago....used to do HO scale.  Looking for ideas on the back run for bridges, etc to try and level the track some more.  Where the dirt is on the right(bottom picture) I have already cleared and looking to put a ladder yard and a longer run that will go through an outdoor kitchen by the fence.  the track will run under the fireplace giving the illusion of it going through the fire!

Heck, my dad has a 1969 Ponitac Grand Prix that is Pullman Green, but with silver trim, but it is real metal, likely chrome.

OK, here's something...different. It's a shortened Model Power GP7m shell on an Athearn S12 frame. I'm trying to put some EMD looking sideframes on the trucks. I need a name for it (not like"Bob", more like GP-something), so see what you guys can come up with.

Excellent work on that locomotive. As for a name, what about GP-5L (the 'L" would be for 'low nose', or, if you want some thing more modern, what about MP-18? If it was an electric locomotive (or steam!), it would be PRR class AA-2, so that's another naming possibility.

I recently installed a TE track side receiver and a socket for a rechargeable drill battery in a Bachmann reefer.  It ran the train shown at the link below for four hours straight before it became necessary to change the battery.  Swapping batteries takes maybe 30 seconds.

   Some time ago I saw some cut-price Bach lowside gons so bought half a dozen.
   Removed side and end boards from all but one which had extra set of boards added to make a 4plank gon.
   A couple have been shortened for use on my portable layout with the smaller steam and diesel locos.

To all who posted pics, really nice work. I especially like Howard's Connie.

Paul M,  what's wrong with "Bob".  Actually looks more like a "Henry", call it a GP-H. I'm glad someone else likes "critters", reminds me of some of my chopped goat projects. I recently made some more powered cabooses for friends, and a powered canteen (water car) for myself from old tender parts.  

I have a Yugoslavia GP, looks like a stretched GP50, really nice body but motor and gears are shot. I'd like to fit the shell on a Bachmann GP chassis if I can get it to fit.  I'll post a picture sometime, see if anyone has some ideas.

My current project is an old coach, chopped from 60' to 50', to go with my Yampa Valley Mail route.  For a picture and details, see "120 Years of Progress".

This is my Spectrum GP30 that I'm working on painting for the Chessie System. The stripe under the grill by the cab needs some straightening and the bottom edge with the orange and blue needs some work. It looks better in real life.

OK guys, here's a kit , actually a pair of kits, put together for a "build a model in two months" challege early in the summer. The tanks are O scale Crummy Products Wooden Oil Tanks from the eighties? I had gotten on eBay. The loading dock is from Deerfield River Laser, also O scale. Both the tanks and dock were 'piped' with Plastruct tubling, elbows, valves, etc.The Oil Tanker I got at a TCA meet in York, PA and relettered with decals from Hamm River Products. It took about two weeks of off and on modeling, but the challenge did show we modelers can get something done in the summer if we really wanna play. ;D

Clicking on the link below will take you to a thread on the 0n30 board that shows some of the track work I have been working on.  The stub switch shown is rather dull and mundane compared to the cars and locomotives shown above, but it it something a little different from what you see on mainstream model railroading.

That's missing the point. Stub switches are used by real 1:1 railroads (narrow-gauge mostly, nowadays), and that's what Jim is modeling (and modeling extremely well, might I add).

I enjoy this part of the hobby. I'd enjoy it even more if I could geta few US locos in kit form other than Bowser, of which I've built a few. RTR is great and I have many RTR locos in plastic and brass but I find building a kit loco very relaxing............... most of the time.

GG and SF,

You missed the "points".

The frog is the X shaped part of the turnout where the left and right rails cross each other.  If you look again at Jim's stub switch, it too has a frog. 

The moving "point rails" are narrowed at the tip and lay against the stock rails on a regular "split rail" turnout, which are better for high speed traffic. 

Stub switches work well in snowy and icy conditions, as there is no need to remove the ice and snow from between the point and stock rails to throw the switch.

Railroads actually heat certain (remotely operated?) switches to keep them snow and ice free in the winter.

I suspect the parts of the frog that are raised above the rails to guide the outer edges of the treads are high enough to interfere with snow plows and that is why we don't seem to see them in snow country.

Thanks, Joe, for the explanations.  I hadn't thought about  stub switches not filling with snow, but it makes sense.

Switch heaters are very common here in Saskatchewan.  I can remember a time when every switch had a broom and shovel next to the switch stand, at least at the start of winter.  Funny that in some areas it was hard to find a shovel or a broom by the end of winter and that people living in those areas almost never had to buy snow shovels or snow brushes.  I expect that the savings in shovels and brushes just about paid for all those expensive heaters.

Good Evening All,

      It has been a long time since I tried to post a pic here so I hope it comes thru.   It is a pic of my single stall engine house,  On30 - a kit from Banta.   I put aside the Banta roofing material and used Papercreek sheetmetal roofing material.   Remember,  this is paper roofing and is colored as you see it my Papercreek.  The only thing I did to the roof was to chalk in the stack runoff.

As soon as I find my dad's camera, I'll have some pics of my reworked 44 tonner. I backdated it to a phase 1a then painted it as CPLT 102. Next up is CPLT 101, which I just now found a picture of after a few years of searching.
