Title: Engine won't reverse
Post by: 44ruffmapa on September 29, 2014, 06:26:57 PM
I have a 2-8-8-4 that runs and sounds great when going forward.  When in reverse the sound functions but the engine will not move.  Have I burnt out something in the decoder or some other problem?  If I can't figure this out I may end up running it forward all the time.  Any ideas?

Try doing a factory reset on the loco. set CV8 to a value of 8.

Try to see if it has the same problem running it on DC if it reverses then one of the motor lead wired has been frayed or there is a poor connection from the board to the motor ,had this problem also .This required some dis assembly to test .Better off using your warranty with this if you have one. .I got lucky with this same problem since mine was a dcc diesel .I fIXED the frayed wire at the motor and problem solved.Seems strange but dc and dcc voltage are different  and with dcc all the connections have to be spot on Hope this helps!

Tried it and no reverse in DC.  I hate to have to send it in for repair.  Shipping one-way is near $20.  I'm thinking of removing the decoder and installing a Digitrax SDH64D using the onboard speaker.

Just a guess but is there a DC adapter to run the loco on DC, no decoder? It might be mechanical. I do know many Bachmann DCC locos have an adapter to run them on DC only.

Pull the plug attaching the decoder to the circuit board, if that's possible?

Cheers

Friend If it is less than a year old the service department is very good at working out things with there warranty. They are great .give the service manager a call or an Email explaining the issue .They helped out with everything with there old school manner ;D

That is probably the best bet.
I just looked at the parts for this loco and it appears the pick-ups in the tender are connected to the decoder board. I can see the 21 pins where the sound module plugs in.
There does not appear to be any DC adapter.
The below picture shows all the wires and two plugs. You can see the bare wires that connect to the decoder board that controls the motor and lights. Click on the picture.

The below picture is the running/light decoder.
