Title: 2-8-0 Oil Tender
Post by: gmhtrains on December 18, 2015, 03:09:59 AM
I recently purchased a Union Pacific 2-8-0 to convert to a National Railways of Mexico locomotive. Changes to the loco will be simple with repositioning the bell ahead of the smokestack the main visual difference. The tender will be a bit more involved, as the coal-burner will need to become an oil-burner. I've already popped out the coal load, but am wondering if Bachmann or a third party has ever offered a drop-in oil bunker? If not, it will not be difficult to scratchbuild an oil bunker, and it would even give an excuse to try Archer's rivet decals for the first time. But with so many resin castings on the market for Bachmann's On30 steamers, I thought that I'd inquire first if a replacement oil tank is already produced.

As one ho likes to tweak and rebuild models to my liking (there are lots of us), I can think of many ways to 'customize' that tender; and Bachmann has a variety of compatible tenders, possibly to your liking.  Oh, and remember; on NdeM locomotives, the headlight was on the smokebox.

Bachmann makes a oil verison of the Vanderbilt tender that was made for the 2-8-0.  Very simple to hook it up.  You should be able to find one on Ebay.  It is more of a wiring project for the 4-6-0 however.

Long, long, long ago there was an oil version of this tender.  Look around, one might pop up.

Nevin;
 you can pick one up right at 'parts and service' section of this site.

Was investigating into this as I have a Spectrum 2-8-0 for my Santa Fe layout - All I can find on the website is a replacement coal load -  Can't find a replacement oil bunker on the Bachmann website - was there ever such a part - or was this comment incorrect?  Thanks!

Give Shapeways a try, I purchased this one (different model) and works great, search the site, maybe you can find one.

Look at the 2-10-2 parts list.

The KCS version had an oil  tender and it is shown there. This was a "long" version of the "short" USRA tender that the 2-8-0 had, but I bet only the water tank was longer, and that the fuel tank was the same.  I have that 2-10-2 at home, I'll check it when I get back.

Hi Gil,
     Are you still looking for a semi-vanderbilt tender?  I have the medium Spectrum Unlettered #89905 tender.  Let me know.
