Title: 009 Compatible with N and HOe Scale?
Post by: EthanTankEngine99 on April 26, 2016, 08:24:35 PM
is 009 Scale compatible with N and HOe scale?
because i'm very interested in using models from Roco, Kato, etc
if so, can you tell me which power supplies to use for it?
Please feel free to reply when you have the time.

'009' is a compromise for 4mm=1ft scale. 2ft (610mm in 4mm scale) gauge was the most common narrow gauge in the UK. But there's really no track commercially available for that in 4mm scale. The closest thing is 9mm gauge (N-scale) track, which in 4mm scale comes out as 2ft 3in (686mm) gauage, which is actually very rare in the UK. But it's readily available, and close enough to 2ft gauge, that it's what most people use for modeling 4mm scale. Hence the '009' designation for 4mm scale on 9mm track.

HOe is 3.5mm=1ft scale that also runs on 9mm gauge track. So the mechanisms can be used for '009', but bodies need to be 'bashed' or swapped out for true 4mm=1ft scale. Some kits for doing this are becoming available, as well as complete cars and a few locomotives.

Pretty much any HOe or N scale DC power supply can be used.

thanks for telling me len!
I actually live in the US and am very interested in UK trains.  ;D
so yeah, it's very good to know that 009 can work with N scale!
Thank you again very much for the info!

welcome to the wonderful wold of narrow gauge , Peco do 009 track , and due to UK modellers showing interest the range could expand , check Gaugemaster for 009 - Minitrains   and Peco track ...

Langley do a kit for the Festiniog Double Farlie loco , using a Bachmann N scale GP40/50 chassis .
and Parkside Dundas for rolling stock kits .

Note that Bachmann (UK) has announced a ready to run 009 range although these are yet to appear. Other companies have also announced some ready to run items, some rolling stock is currently available. Of course the Thomas narrow gauge items can be converted to represent their prototypes. In terms of mixing 009 and HOe purists don't because of the scale diffence but many do, noting that narrow gauge equipment varied in side a lot anyway. It's up to you.
