I have a Williams Genesis type O scale Model locomotive that uses two 808-e0002 motor assemblies. It operates on a 3 rail track that has an 18v, 80 amp transformer. Does anyone know if these motor assemblies use AC current, or is the current being rectified to DC power before it is supplied to the motor?

Usually, all Williams products (such as the Genesis locomotive) are equipped with 2 DC flywheel motors, and an electronic direction control circuit board, that has a rectifier that changes AC power from the track / transformer to DC for the motors. An AC transformer should be sufficient for operating your locomotive. The AC power will activate the lights, the direction control circuit board, and (if equipped) the horn control circuit board, and then the motors, once you cycle the locomotive from neutral to forward.

80 Amp??? You could weld with that! :o
I suspect that's supposed to be 80 watts. Which should be enough power if heavy trains and long grades aren't involved.
