Title: What rolling stock would we like to see in the future?
Post by: ksivils on August 04, 2008, 11:57:18 AM
We modelers always seem to be interested in new locomotives that we
would like to see produced rather than new rolling stock.
Understandable of course as the locomotives are the "stars" of the
action so to speak.

Bachmann has done an excellent job of producing a reasonably wide
range of rolling stock in its On30 line and I would imagine they sell
more rolling stock than they do locomotives - I could be wrong.

There are only three pieces of rolling stock that I would love to see
Bachmann introduce to its product line. Everything else I can want or
need is either already in production, available from another
manufacturer, or best of all, can be kitbashed from existing in
production rolling stock.

I really would like to see a 24-25 ft. steel box car brought into
production. I would imagine that the same underframe casting could
then be used to make an all steel flat car, and possibly a tank car by
adding a tank to the flat car sans the deck. Some narrow gauges
modernized in an effort to survive.

I really want to see a closed vestibuled coach similar to those used
on the Rio Grande's San Juan/Shavano run and by the ET&WNC, shortened
to the same length as the current Bachmann coaches.

And last on my list, a parlor car with an observation platform on one
end and a closed vestibule on the other. I would settle for the
kitbashing/splicing an existing Bachmann parlor car with a "closed
vestibule" coach to make one though.

What else in terms of rolling stock would other On30 modelers like to see?

Something fitting to the SR&RL Forneys, let´s say some Maine-typical Boxcars, in fact Bach-man could make some pretty easy if the front and rear end hatches are missing on the model - they looked very similar to the C&S Boxcar Bachmann already produces...

Shortenend SR&RL or WW&F (No I don´t want to press that hard for a full length Coach or Combine...) Passenger Equipment to accompany the Forneys which deserve some stuff to pull along. Or, some kind of variation from the Bachmann Combine, the WW&F triple Combination Car "Taconet" - a Jackson&Sharp Prototype from 1901 - a beauty with its lining...

A Plow such as SR&RL 513 which could be built up on a Flat Car Body.

Logging Disconnects for all the Loggers out there... :D :D :D

I think if Bachmann made a steel box car then could  it be taken into consideration about making it a outside frame?   would make it more intresting. ;D :
how about putting a four wheel truck under the existing On30 caboose making it a nice bobber? :o
and last but not least, that log skidder that you made in HO....MAN!!! you should have made that in O scale Bachmann! >:(

My request would be for On30 versions of the newer LS freight cars, including the new long caboose.  I think the frameless tank car would also be popular.

As was mentioned in another thread, how about some cars used to haul sugar cane out of the fields?  Something with a Caribbean and/or Hawaiian flavor.

YES......YES.....YES......YES.......YES......YES........YES.........YES.........YES!!!!!!!
I would rather have the On30 versions of the new large scale stuff also but heck everything seems to be going to sugarcane or pure 30inch.
                                         OR
I would like to see the present On30 box car made with ladders that are truly seperate and doors that can be made to be removable to operate in either direction....a kit bashers delite!!!!

How a bout a bigger caboose? Like an EBT one, those were close enough for the ET&WNC. Or some new coaches. I really like the idea of the steel box car, and flat,  but has anyone considerd new styles of logging cars. I would like to see some longer versions of the ones we have now.

Hello

I would also like to see a new caboose perhaps a small bogie type like the RGS had or EBT , another 2 types that would go well are a steel box and steel fish belly flat. One wagon that is a little left field could be a steel gondola. our narrow gauge here in Australia had many different type as do South Africa so there could be a new idea there

Dusten,

I would have thought you would have beat the drums for the ET&WNC trailer hauler, now thats a unique item!. the flat would be easy to scratch ,but the trailer would be another story. this would go nice with your ten wheeler, the only thing else needed would be those unique passenger cars (truly a  nice road).....don't waste request on log cars they are easy to build. ::) OH and by the way if the Bachmann had made a Mason Bogie the guys on the South Park group would still be dancing a irish jig even if the window spaces are wrong :-\

Ok I will beat the drum's and give out a war cry, but I thought people were a little tired of my badgering of ET&WNC,  Yes, one of those piggy backs would be awesome, also a ET&WNC caboose, and finally but not least, the ET&WNC Coach/ Combine 15, that would be beautiful, or the vistible coaches. Either way, they would be a great a addition to the bachmann line. Ummm...... I wonder what else ET&WNC I could bug with.

I see that Mark ("LurchBird") has already mentioned my suggestion, but here's an excerpt from my recent post:

On a similar subject, at the National Train Show I once again pressed Mr. Lee Riley and the Bach-man for a three-pack of 4-wheel sugar cane cars, similar to their boxed sets of mining and logging cars.  The end bulkheads could be removable, so the sugar cane cars can also be used as "shorty" flatcars.  Some cars from the Oahu Railway & Land Co. were once on display at Travel Town (Griffith Park, Los Angeles), but I don't know their current condition or location.  I'm impressed with Bachmann's recent resin castings (wood fuel loads, pulpwood cargo, etc.), and removable resin sugar cane and sugar bag loads would be nice extras for the set.  Sugar plantations were a major industry served by narrow gauge railroads, but so far Bachmann hasn't touched this subject.

And if Bachmann produces Hawaiian narrow gauge, why not a relabeled gondola car with a resin pineapple load for the Dole cannery?

Expanding on the Hawaiian theme, a two-pack of Kalakaua-style passenger cars would compliment the sugar cane trains nicely.

I suspect we'll see a version of the HO scale log skidder car, and Mr. Lee Riley might be planning an excursion car that's more accurate for narrow gauge than the prototypes seen at the National Train Show.  (At least that was my impression during our conversation.)

I echo the pleas for a new caboose -- perhaps a longer model that could later be released as a side-door drovers caboose?  Or perhaps a separate frame and running gear to convert the current caboose into a 4-wheel bobber?

Maintenance of way cars would be nice, though I would balk at recycled lumber camp cars.  A rotary snowplow or a simple snowplow car should be popular.  Modifying a tank car for firefighting purposes is another possibility.  And since you're providing new Mogul pilots with operating couplers, why not a Mogul snowplow pilot?

Eagerly anticipating,

David

just one thought more folks: What about a Barnhard Log Loader, what about a Flat Car with a Logging Donkey or a two or three drum steam winch...?
Wouldn´t that be cool?

Definitely support the idea of a more Logging-like Caboose, more or less a hut sitting on a Logging Disconnect frame... So, how ´bout some Logging Disconnects ready to run???

Cheers, Tom ;) ;) ;)

I have posted about excursion cars in other threads - yes I would like to see one but preferably not the HO/N ones (too Disneyland for my taste) or at least modified versions with flippable (flipping?) seats.

A "drovers" or other caboose with passenger accommodation would be good - perhaps based on the short Sandy River cabooses #556-558 or the earlier and smaller #554. (Yes I know there are kits for these but we are talking ready to run here).

Hi

This is a baulk End Flat kit bashed from a Bachmann gondola. I used the sides to from the ands and used the removed stake holders to hold the Baulk Ends in place.

The result was very satisfying and I built 8 off these

The long caboose would be great :) :) :). Also a genaric shorter passenger car, a bober caboose and some Rio Grande style passenger cars.    I think that the piggy-back cars sound really cool even if they are east coast . A frameless tank car is something that I think is a must and a taller sided gondola like the one in G scale would be great also. I think it would be wise of Bachmann to realise suger-cane cars since they have so many locomotives to complament them(I have no insterest in them but Bachmann seems to think that non US models will sell well).

I have two separate wish-lists for passenger and freight cars. For passenger cars, I'd like to see a combination baggage-RPO car and a Boston, Revere Beach, & West Lynn-style passenger car. While originally an East Coast prototype, a few of those cars got very far afield after the BRB&WL was abandoned.

For freight cars, I'd like to see a double-truck steel sugar cane car, like the sort still operating in Cuba up to a couple of years ago. I'd also like to see an outside-braced wooden side boxcar, preferably one with a simulated corrugated-metal roof either a la Oahu Railway & Land Co. or something found in Latin America.

I don't know what your modeling but I thought that you might want to know about this quote from American Narrow Gauge "To the writer's knowledge there never was any steel box cars built for an American Line.Narrow Gauge Lines in Mexico and Central America did acquire steel equipment following World War 2."

Actually, the EBT had some all steel box cars.  During WW II all steel box cars built by Pullman wound up on the White Pass & Yukon Route and the Oahu narrow gauge.

There were a few other odds and ends that were home made as well.

While not all steel, the C&S had freight cars with all steel underframes that would later see service on the RGS and White Pass.

I have Hilton's book and it is excellent.  I have read it several times and do not recall reading that quote, I don't doubt it's in print, and am surprised Hilton forgot about the EBT box cars.

EBT-style steel boxes would be great. More P&C lumber stuff would be neat too. (Cuz it would be right for WVM  ;D )

It would be neat if Bachman considered some 'oddball' stuff. Hawaiian. Cuban. Things we don't ordinarily see, but that have US roots. (US Navy narrow gauge boxcars?)

Shoot, maybe WVM 103? It's a wooden boxcar.

The WVM also used Jackson & Sharp passenger cars, so there's a possibility too.

Mann's Creek and Cairo & Kanawha offer some interesting not-much-seen rolling stock as well.

The Western stuff has been overdone, but how about some Southern narrow gauge? It would take research, but in the end, I think it would pay off for Bachmann.

There are many who would like to see something that Forneys really pulled.  If you want to take the time, and make the effort, converting American Flyer Franklin Passenger cars to On30 results in a car that is longer than the Bachmann cars.
Another near conversion is the former Industrial Rail Ore car.  It makes a real nice early hopper. [Atlas has purchased that line].

Can we make a whole bunch of suggestions?

My layout is tighter and steeper than a witches hiney, so i need tighter turning and lighter rolling stock, savvy?

How about shorty passenger cars and excursion cars in standard and short versions, more work cars, blacksmittys, MOW, tool and a wood water car. I guess you all will make us wait til next year to get us a log skidder like the tiny folk got this year?  Some variety in rail trucks, a ford model t inspection car like Accucraft in G scale would look tidy next to the  Pierce Arrow.

And a bone to pick,  a skeleton log car that dosnt need surgery to make tight turns,  thought it was me til I talked to a seasoned On30 vet and he told me the frame needs to be ground to make clearance for the wheels to turn properly, on a log car voted best of the class?

Keep up the great work B Mann, Railbus is awesome, just remember the details make the model.

Good Morning All,

In anearlier reply,  the EBT caboose was mentioned,  and as many of you "oldtimers" on this forum know,  that is an item I have asked for - for many years.
Deerfield River Laser,  also mentioned earlier for passenger car items,  now has an EBT caboose kit with decals,  but no trucks or couplers.   The trucks that Bachmann offers,  that came on the two bay hoppers are a VERY nice fit for these cabooses.
The link that was provided earlier for Deerfield River Laser,  for passenger cars took you to the New England style cars.   If you click on the O scale link to the left,  you will find a seperate file for EBT passenger cars.    Some of the kits are meant to retrofit the standard Bachmann passenger cars.   However,  DRL also offers kits to make a full length EBT car.

I will chime in with the desire for more cars that would be apropriate for the forney to pull. The pulpwood cars are a great start, the gondolas and flats are pretty close, so a new run in SR&RL roadname would be nice there too. However, the boxcars are the main staple and sorely missing. Changing the door to open the other way, making individual ladders, and a new roofwalk while omitting the end doors  and lower door track would make a reasonable looking Maine prototype.

I am currently taking one and doing just that. I'm using styrene to fill in the end doors and adapt the upper door track ( it will be non-operating but look right ) I'm also replacing the grabs with ladders, filed down the roof to make it flat and remove the grooves, and replacing the roofwalk with a wooden one complete with end platforms. The last steps are making the odd shaped end buffers and adding the low frame archbars or Grandt on30 trucks, haven't decided yet.

The large scale tank cars in On30 would be a dream come true!  They did answer the request for the large scale 4-6-0 in On30, so perhaps they will do the tank cars as well.

I would imagine that there would be a serious market for these with the On3 guys as well!

I am with you on the tank cars!    never could understand why folks allways complain about minimun radius in On30 then you see the same people with a large scale indoor layout! :o

the present Bachmann freight cars are easly convertable to a maine prototype, but to take them beyond eastern modeling is not easy.
most of us purchase the engines and have to resort to other manufactures for the freight cars. :-[
I would think that a person with a small O scale narrow gauge layout would want a few nice cars. why not redo the present freight cars with doors that are removeable and removeable ladders. cast on detail went out with tinplate. ??? >:(

come on Bachmann, we got enought varity of engines, just improve the freight cars...or produce a good generic boxcar ::) ::)

If you would like a non-eastern box car and are willing to pony up for and build a kit, Keith Wiseman has some really nice box car kits that include the C&S steel underframe box cars and RGS 4000 series box cars.  These are not inexpensive, but Keith's stuff is quality and the bodies are one piece castings!

These kits are for both On3 and On30 so you would need to tell Keith which gauge.  I think his web address is www.locopainter.com or something similar.

I forgot, I would like a steel box car like Dallas Mallerich's 20 foot kits, but in the 25 foot range.

Hmm... didn't think about DCC control when I first suggested the rotary snowplow.  But if you have DCC, why not go all the way and add SOUND?

Can you imagine how popular a DCC sound-equipped rotary snowplow would be in ANY gauge, especially HO?   :o

Yes, a D&RGW rotary would be really nice, especially when the available options for rotaries are either really expensive brass, or really hard to build craftsman kits (also expensive).

I don't think this has been mentioned.  Mount Blue Model Co. has some new wood kits, which look very nice.  They have several cabooses, but Ken has also produced some new box cars, pulpwood cars, and flat cars, all based on 2 foot prototypes.  I built one of his cabooses, and while it's a fairly complex project, the pieces fit together nicely, and the end result is great.

But I know, RTR plastic models are easier.

the Mount Blue Kits are great (did build the Caboose and the SR&RL Style Caboose which both can be mount on Bachmann Chassis) and they are fun to build. Even since they really fit like a glove to the Bachmann Chassis. They´re precisely manufactored. :D :D :D
