Title: Older GP38-2 (?) Union Pacific #866 missing wheels
Post by: Spawn of Chaos on October 02, 2008, 03:37:39 AM
Hello again everyone, I'll bet NO ONE remembers me.  I haven't been here in about half a year (heh...).

I just recently bought, at Goodwill (laugh it up, it was 0.99 for a full set XD), a set of Bachmann trains and track.  This set included a Bachmann I think GP38-2 in Union Pacific colors with the road number 866.  At first glance, this loco appeared to be in perfect condition save a broken off horn bell and missing front handrails.  However, upon closer inspection, I found that the front truck, though it is there, has NO WHEELS!   :o I'm wondering if it's possible to get two sets of wheels for the loco model with the board inside that says "KADER 8302" on it.  Thanks!

I'd post pix, but I can't find my **** camera...

I'll break this up in sections:
No Wheels Problem:
You can simply go to the red sidebar to the left of this screen. "Order Parts" is the 7th one down under "Gift Shop" and above "Service Department". But if that doesn't help, then "Service Department" might be helpful. ;)

"KADER 8302":

Well if I remember correctly, Kader is the new Bachmann:

Quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachmann_IndustriesKader takeover
In light of falling profits, in 1981 Kader acquired Bachmann. It changed the name to Bachmann Industries[6] and used the new brand to expand worldwide, such as the European market. It is also part of the strategy to take over other failing companies in Europe and put them under one single name. The packaging changed from plastic jewel cases to white paper boxes with cellophane window.[6] Starting from 1982 Bachmann began to slowly retool individual product lines one by one. A typical example would be the replacement of metal gears to plastic ones in the Diesel locomotives. By 1992 all cars were manufactured in China.[14]

So KADER is the manufacturer company, and 8302 is obviously the product number. So it is also the reason for it to be called "Bachmann Industries". With that, the quality when down. (In the bold print.)

By the way, you missed A LOT of things being gone that long. ;)

Actually, Bachmann quality generally improved under Kader. Replacing the noisy brass gears with with plastic gears (now the norm for HO and N scale locos) was definitely an improvement not a cheapening.

History aside, you will want to call Bachmann's service department (215-533-1600) and see if they can sell you spares. If not, you could try Northwest Shortine (www.nwsl.com) and see if they have anything that will fit.

Hmm, that's helpful.  I'm not sure how old this thing is, but I'll look there.

The packaging is indeed the white paperish box with cellophane window.  Plastic "insert" thingy and all...plus the tooling on the details SUX.  I think mine may still have brass gears, which I actually sort of prefer over plastic because they're less likely to break (**** athearns!).

Edit:

Nope, nothing in the Bachmann store.  I'll try that Northwest Shortline site that Mr. Conrail gave me.

Edit 2:

Yay!  I think NWSL has what I need!

Problem is...I'm not even close to 50% sure of that...

Edit 3 (durr):

NWSL HAS WHAT I NEED!  Thank you Conrail Quality!...the person, not the RR.   ;D
