Title: Spectrum #25014 ON30 D&RGW Passenger Car Set O.B.
Post by: Cenzo1527 on March 17, 2007, 10:17:45 AM
Click here: eBay: Spectrum #25014 ON30 D&RGW Passenger Car Set O.B. (item 200089829141 end time Mar-21-07 23:49:39 PDT)

Is this item a legitimate Bachmann set?    The black Locomotive shown looks like a regular HO scale while the passenger cars are larger.   And can I use it around my small pond over the spring and summer   storing it outside in a water resistant tunnel?   Will the track rust or become brittle?    I don't have any indoor room but I thought this was a terrific little addition to a 4' by 6' above ground pond.

If you think it wont work, please tell me , I have many G scale but I moved from the burbs to the city and still want an outdoor setup but in a small space.

Any help will appreciated  and if not this set I want the ON30:

Scale, Category: On30 Scale - Sets
Item No.: 25014

Roadname: Denver & Rio Grande WesternTM

Why not support your local hobby shop?  You may pay a bit more but can  help you.  You will also have the item in hand & be able to test it.

Don't use the steel track (black roadbed) outside.  The rail is steel & will rust.  Also you are putting electricity near water.

BTW On30 is simply O gauge trains that run on HO track.
Good luck!

The Roaring Ridge is all On30, that is, 1:48 trains that run on HO track.  And Jayl1 is right, the track won't survive the direct sunlight for long.  I do believe that Peco track is UV resistant, and they make On30 track.

If you don't have a local hobby shop, consider supporting one of the larger train shops that has an online store, like Trainworld, Wholesale Trains, or Caboose Hobbies.  I checked Trainworld's site, and they sell this set for $144.95, plus shipping, of course.  No bidding.

I second the above posts - get your trains from a dealer where you can see what you are getting.

As for track you need something other than Bachmann steel for outdoor use.

The ebay auction is a regular Bachmann On30 set..nothing unusual or "wrong" about it.

it didnt sell because they are asking too much money for it.

I wouldnt recommend trying On30 outdoors..it probably can be done, but why bother when G-gauge is so much better for outdoors? the track and equipment is meant to be outdoors, (except fopr Bachmann track of course!)
If you want to put a railroad outdoors, you would be much better off forgetting about On30 and exploring G-gauge instead.

Rubbish,
With Peco track being UV  resistant and good ballast laid down, there's no reason whatsoever for not building an 0n30 outdoor empire.
Here in UK we have many OO outdoor layouts running all year round.
Just takes a long time to clean all the track and negotiation with SWMBO for further track rights!
'Sides - 0n30 is a darn site cheaper than large scale for outdoor playing!

Agreed David,

Many moons ago there was a lengthy article in one of the older UK model mags - MRN or some such. It gave chapter and verse for an N-scale layout in a garden!

On30 is an excellent size for a small layout in anything from a window box upwards, but it certainly needs weather resistant track.

well ok..but im writing from the perspective of Western New York..where garden railroad tracks are buried under several feet of ice and snow 5 months of every year. I wouldnt dream of even attempting On30 outdoors here..the track couldnt handle the weather.

so I guess it just depends on where you live! ;)

Cenzo put no location data in his profile, so thats no help..
