You have not used available information on AnyRail website. Lots there.

Look through the online manual to get an idea of what can be done.
  Help >> Online manual

Download and Open the program,  click on the TRACK LIBRARIES link, which is organized by gauge, manufacture, track brand and code.

For HO (you did not state) -- Under TRACK LIBRARIES , HO  - can be found multiple Atlas (3) and Peco (Cool track libraries to choose from.

Example: HO Atlas Code 83 track library includes all their sectional pieces and flex track.

Since this is Bachmann Trains above is all I will provide about this subject.

. . .
2. Remove the sound decoder and speaker and install jumpers.
. . .

Not that simple.  Tender is not equipped with PCB with 8-pin socket to accept sound decoder. The tender is equipped with speaker and decoder with 21-pin socket for add-on EM-1 sound module.

Disregard - Had an EM-1 in mind not the 2-8-4 Berkshire.

HO 2-8-4 Berkshire Nickel Plate Road 765  Sound Value equipped.

That is the best performance you can expect using a DC MRC Tech II Railpower 1400.

It is time to acquire a DCC system that can take full advantage of the capability of the Sound Value decoder factory installed in the locomotive.

Here is the k4 underframe

http://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=popup_image&pID=1149

I can see the power pickup shoes. But are they pointed  up into the engine?  Or down to the rail?  Which I donít want.  Can anyone inform?

Per diagram http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/dwg/dwgs/H844X-IS00.PDF  the K4 power wipers are  installed towards rail.

You have an answer regarding the USRA Pacific model if you accept the pick ups on the new Pacific are pretty much the same as the K4  from Yardmaster as a definitive answer.
