Soundtraxx decoder # 827104. I believe this is a hard wired decoder. You will need an adapter for it. The adapter has an 8 pin plug on one end and a 9 pin on the other. Also a good 28mm speaker is needed. I get decoders from Accu-lites as they have discount prices. On the decoder.one end has the wires coming out  of the decoder to wire iit in. This has a 9pin plug that plugs into the decoder. This plug must be CAREFUULY removed and replaced with the adapter. Then it can be plugged into the board on the RS3. Digitrax makes these adapters: DHWHP and DHWHPS. The PS has a shot lengt of wire. Hoe this helps. Joe

I think you may have to add a DCC decoder to this loco to run on DCC. Try going to the websight of BLI. The instuctions that came with the loco might have the answer as well. Joe

I have 2 Athearn RS3's with MRC sound decoders in them. I've had not had any problems with them. I have 2 with Soundtraxx decoders-one factory one I installed. I would go with the Soundtraxx one my self, but a newbie might have problems with the instalation vif you go with the board style as the old board has to come out and the new one installed, plus does the Bachmann RS3 use LEDS for the headlights? Then you have to install resisters if you go with the board replacement or go with a decoder with 8pin harness and not have to deal with resisters. Then all you do is take out the old decoder and plur in hte new one. Don't forget to get a 28mm speaker!.  Joe.

There are several ways to go about this. The easiest and least expensive is to buy an MRC sound decoder with an Alco 244 engine sound sceme. They just came out with a new line of decoders priced around $65.00. Check their web sight for part #1614. The other is to get a Soundtraxx board decoder to replace the one that came in the loco. This is more expensive. Either way, you need a 28mm speaker that should fit in the hole in the fuel tank. The MRC decoder has an 8 pin harness theat will plug into the PC board on the RS  . Take out the decoder thats installed from the factory and replce it with this one. Make sure there is room inside for the capacitor to fit.  Joe

Repower up the system with nothing on the track like sugested. Put one loco on the track you know wont caust the unit to flash it's lights. If this works you unit is fine. Check the tender wheels on the loco that caused the short. These should have wipers on them. One side of each axle is insulated. Make sure the insulated wheels are on same side per truck and that the two trucks don't have the insulated axlws on both side. IE the forward truck should have the insulated wheels  on the left side as you look at it. The back truck should have the insulated wheels on the right side. If not this will cause a short.

One more thing if you decide on the digitrax decoder, the sdn144ps I think that's the decoder #, has the 8 pin harness attached to it. It's listed for n guage but will work in ho. Same sound scemes as the sdh165d.

I bought soundtraxx decoders in the past from Acculites(accu_lites.com). They have discount prices and good service. On programming decoders, post the town or city you live and ask for help from some one close by. I use a digitrax dcc system and bought their PR3 programmer. This can be hooked up to a computer with decoder pro down loaded to it and be used to program decoders. This would be a good way to program decoders with out buying a new system. Joe

The digitrax decoder is a lot less than the soundtraxx one, but it has/ had some problems: low sound levels, slowing the loco down when the horn/whistle is blown. To program any cv's you need a more advanced DCC system than the basic EZ Command. I have one of these in a Connie and am saving up to buy a soundtraxx. Joe

Dear Yardmaster, does Bachmann have any undecorated bodies for the GP7 or GP9 available?  Thanks.
Joe.

On this web sight on the product page find the search window and type in Pro box. This is whats needed I believe if you want to use more than 1 throttle. The receiver is what the infared beam hits to send the signal to the command station. Pretty much the only things that ruin a decoder is an electrical short caused by wireing one up  wrongor haveing the wires on the decoeder touch each other or metal on the loco  that is connected to a power source. It's hard to ruin one programming it. There is a cv that resets a decoder to factory settings. Usually a value of 8 to CV8. I'm 58 and swithced over to DCC 3 years ago. I'm still learning.

The Dynamis is infared. It works by line of sight. You need to add a Pro box and additional infared receivers to expand the coverage of the signal. On the loco, you might have to reset the decoder to factory settings. There might be a CV that was changed to run on DC only. Model Railroader did a review of the Bachmann GP7 last year I think and the review mentioned changing a CV to get it to run on DCC. Hope this helps.  Joe

Is there a chance Bachmann will expand the line of value added sound loco's? /Maybe the RS3's and GP7/9? Thanks.

Do the Bachmann HO RS-3's have a space in the fuel tank for a speaker like the GP7/GP9's do? I'm thinking of getting 1 or 2 of them but want to add sound. Thanks for any help.
