That's the way I did it too.

The chassis will come with a pilot truck, the old style one. I think that is the one you are looking for. "Using the old pilot" means using the old STYLE pilot truck and that will be already on the new chassis. I have ordered a couple of new chassis too and that's what is included. You have interpreted the ad incorrectly.

The new chassis you ordered comes with a pilot truck.

I think you are probably over lubricating those bevel gears in the first place. They serve to make the pistons go up and down but are not the prime mover of the loco. They are basically "decoration". They do not require as much lube as you seem to be applying. I don't see how dry graphite could possibly hurt anything.  Cool

I don't own a Lyn but I do have a 1:20 Porter that I converted to battery. They seem to be the same size, and I used a NiMH 9.6v battery pack in each side tank (connected in series). The can be had for about 15 dollars each from

I'm confused here. The drive shafts on a Bachmann Shay do not turn the wheels. The front drive shaft turns the simulated three cylinder steam engine, and the engine turns the other drive shafts, that in turn rotate the FREE WHEELING gears on the second and third trucks. They do not turn the wheels. Electric motors in the trucks drive the locomotive. The drive shafts are there for show. I hardly think your Shay is useless.  Huh?

You will need the 31mm Big Hauler wheels. The 36mm wheels are for Spectrum cars.

Hey fellow G scalers

The HDRR (my railroad) is now the proud owner of 2 Bachmann Industrial moguls. After some time in the shops they both emerged ready for service. Both were modified the same way. Gutted, rewired, and two pounds of weight added in the boilers. I am very satisfied with them now and run them often for both passenger service (three Jackson and Sharp cars) or freight (5-6 freight cars) with no slipping even on wet rails. It's a big improvement in performance!

We're all just lucky that Bachmann is still in business and able to honor the lifetime warranty on what they sell. Most L.S. manufacturers such as Aristocraft,Kalamazoo, and Delton are gone leaving only Bachmann, LGB, Piko ,and Hartland still making new product.

Charles Ro is going to be very surprised that USA Trains has gone out of business (according to you).  Roll Eyes

A problem was detected during yesterday's running of the Mogul. If the track undulated up or down even slightly (as outdoor railroads always do) the cowcatcher was contacting the rails and slightly lifting the front drivers causing a slight lose of traction (slipping). I decided I could remove the cowcatcher from the pilot beam with a razor saw. Now all is well.

Now it's doing great...

I spent today on the bench with the mogul. I gutted it and fitted a 1 pound ingot where the PCB used to be (along with the weight I added in other areas yesterday). I rewired all functions and added a resistor for each light. I weighed my other untouched mogul at 2 pounds 5 ounces. My reworked mogul now weighs 4 pounds 5 ounces. I can't test it on the rails tonight (it's pouring here in north Florida). I also removed the smoke switch and and polarity switch. I used the smoke switch as an on off switch under the smoke box door.
Tomorrow I will get it out there  (if it's not pouring) and see what it will do now. I will eventually rework the second on too. I loved the looks but hated the performance.  Wink

Here is a video of it out on the rails today 1/29/2018
