Trainman203, I don't think anyone knows how to drive in the snow any more.  They have a big snow up north, and what do you see on tv?  Cars and truck all over place.  Jonathan, It is easy to make an oil tender out of a cold tend.  Len, I see that little ash car is automatic.  That third rail keep the door shut, and as soon as the third rail ends the door opens and dumps the ash.

unplugged it does not show a short?  So you plug it in and it shows a short.  Do you have any cars or locomotives on the track?  If you do remove them.  If you are feeding current at different location make sure that the wires are not crossed.  If you have 50 feet of track, my guess is that you have been running the layout before and all was well.

Well my first 12 years of life I lived in a house in NJ.  When I heard a train, I would run outside & around the house, & there was the railroad. The first train of the day had a pusher.  The helper would return in an hour or so.  The second train was empty hoppers, it would return about 6 hours latter. The third train was a local.  It would take 1 or 2 hours to return.  The local had 4-8-0 cb.  The rest were all 2-8-2s.  CRRofNJ

Why not just run wires from the power unit to the light in the dummy, with a plug between the units?

Well think small, like 2-8-0, 4-6-0, no bigger than 2-8-2, or 4-6-2

When ever a track is taken out of service, as soon as possible the crossing is removed.  It will be taken out as a unit and mover to the side.  They may have even set the crossing on the out of service track.  If the track is ever put back in service, it is a simple job to put it back.  Crossing are bad news for railroads.  When the Rock Island shut down in eastern Ok. The KCS pulled the crossing.  It turned out that the Rock had some cars they need to pull out.  They raised the track about a foot and put rails over the KCS tracks and pulled the cars, removed the rails and that was it.

Founders & Manufacturers of the original Magne-Matic Knuckle Coupler HOn3 through G ... WORLD'S BEST MAGNETIC COUPLERS FOR OVER 70 YEARS!  That said, It sounds like the problem is with the coupler on the engine.  Try running the train slow up the hill to see if you can see what is happening.  At any rate go to and it will tell you which coupler you need for the engines, and cars.
