16  Discussion Boards / HO / Modernizing NS 5555 on: August 16, 2017, 07:41:32 AM
I just received NS 5555 a GP 38-2.

In looking on railpictures.net I noticed that the Bachmann version does not come close to what the picture looked like.  I think this is because the locomotive was rebuilt at some point.

Among other things The horn has been moved back, ditch lights added and something was put over the cab (A/C)? Any ideas as to where I would get parts to modernize the locomotive if I chose to.  I am not looking for functionality just appearance.

Do not just limit yourself to Bachmann Products (No offense Mr. B) consider other DCC systems like NCE powercab or digitrax Zypher.  All Dcc decoders that  are NMRA compliant should work with any system.

If it's under warranty I would contact Bachmann.

Otherwise I would replace it with a new unit MRC is probably the best out there.

Why would they not move together at the same speed.  Last year for reasons that I would rather not go into here I traded my Nissan Versa for the same car with more features but the same base  engine and as I would expect it was the samt to drive and handle or at least very close. I have expected that so much I did not bother test driving the new car. Just mafe sure. It had what I needed.

Try ebay I refuse to believe someone won't have the walk around companion.

Like I said before I learned best practices along the way.  Had I known that the old layout was coming down Prematurely I would not have ballested.

The old layout was not soldered, as that would defeat the purpose of using ez track.  Besides as I gain more experience I learn these things.  The new layout is sodered and has multiple feeders.

I do not recall having Continuity problems with ballasted EZ track. Not that it couldn't happpen but not if you are careful with the glue.  As with all ballast including the current SIW the bigger problem has been an errant piece of ballast getting stuck on the rails causing a derailment.  I think it solved that with multiple passes of my fingers alongthe rails and then the vacuum cleaner.

Those Map style box cars intrigue me.  I presume the announcements were timed to the York TCA show.

Is everything prototypical on the SIW, Joe?

Obviously not

Thanks, didn't think so.

Begs a question; if the plan is to ballast, why bother using EZ track Huh?

The new SIW uses flex track but to answer your question snaping together EZ track is easi and faster than using flex or sectional track and roadbed though your are paying a price for the convenience ballasting is not required but IMHO makes the track look better.

Obviously not but the seems of roadbed track are just something that seem to bother me.  We all choose our compromises.

There is no reason why you cannot ballast ez track.  The usual wet water and diluted white glue work fine.  My problem with  un-ballasted ez track is that you can see the seams between sections and thus it looks unprototypical.

But if you can afford it I would skip the second EZ mates and use metal Kadee couplers if you are replacing.  They will last a longer.

Tim Hortons coffee has the same thing and is cheaper imho.

But I just use a paper towel.
