I am starting a new CSX layout and I have a Bachmann Union Pacific B23-7 and a B23-7 Santa Fe. I want them in my layout but I don't know how. Well, I got to thinking today and they are going to be leased units. I am going to paint a black stripe down the "Union Pacific" and the "Santa Fe" on the sides of the locos and  also on the nose logo. What kind of paint shour I use? I will have some black latex paint left over, so should I use that?

Thanks

Here's an example a couple UP units running as leased units

Observe the red stripe on the nose

And a BN leaser in a CSX consist

Also, to my knowledge no former AT&SF locos have ever been leased to CSX, nor have any been B23-7s, but ultimately its your railroad and its as realistic as you want it to be.

Thanks. so should I use red paint instead of black? And is latex paint a good choice?

I live next to the CSX main line in Ohio and see all kinds of oddball units. I have recently seen BNSF, Union Pacific, Norfolk & Southern and CN locomotives. Sometimes they are mixed with CSX units and sometimes they are all the same road names. I see old Conrail units mixed with CSX all the time. Today I saw a couple of slugs and a yard switcher behind a pair of GE dash 9 locomotives going south. I haven't been seeing any of these locomotives with logos or numbers painted out, if those are leased then they are running them just the way they got them from the other railroad. I have seen a few Chessie cat locomotives but those are getting to be a rare sight these days and I know of at least one Loco still wearing B&O blue with the capital dome logo on the nose.

I had thought that CSX had painted all of the Chessie, B&O, Seaboard and so on locomotives, except conrail. I guess I was wrong.

Some of those locomotives don't get to the paint shop very often. I see some of them going by here that are so rusty I can't tell what color they were.

i read somthing about their being 5 CSX engines in chessie system paint and in 2003, 2 of them got repainted. So their still is 3 and they are near the ohio area.

Note I said ATSF, I've seen several in BNSF paint, and the old Conrail paint is all over the place, I see it almost every time I see a CSX consist.

you never know what you'll see when the economy is running well.

examples, all from csx trains in 2005-2008 era in the pittsburgh area......

atsf gp9 running(!) on an auto rack train.

up gp15-1 on eastbound freight.

bnsf painted b23-7 on westbound auto rack train. this was a former atsf unit.

helm leasing sd40x 6399. this is a real kitbasher's dream. it was one of the prototype sd40s built in 1965 and as such is a hybrid. sd40 machinery, on an sd35 frame, with the flared radiators of an sd45.....

helm 7869, a former bn sd40-2 which was experimentally modifies to burn natural gas. as suchit recieved asn sd45 style flared radiator for increased cooling. it was painted in a unique green and white paint job, which it was still wearing when i saw it.

regarding the oddball units on csx in ohio, csx serves larry's truck & electric outside youngstown. they are a major locomotive dealer and rebuilder, and probably many of the units seen were enroute to or from there.....

Jward, it sounds like you've seen about 1 of everything when it comes to leased locos. I've never in all my days seen a loco leased to CSX running in original ATSF paint (I've seen them in BNSF paint), but I guess its happened. I stand corrected.

jward

no, the atsf units weren't leasers, they were actual bnsf units that ran through. they and union pacifics used to be quite common, but that stopped about a year and a half ago when the economy crashed. that was the surprising thing, that they'd run through a gp9 or other such unit.

wait until the economy picks back up. when the traffic levels are high, anything and everything gets pressed into service.

No, don't use latex paint. I'd use decal stripes, from Microscale, rather than paint to get a uniform, prototypical width.

The bottom line is this: Bachmann does not lease any of their engines. They are 'for sale' only. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Here is one of the last Chessie cats photographed last november. It is sitting in the weeds with a failed main generator, sad sight.  http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=311503&nseq=69
