my bachmann 4-4-0 modern

My bachmann 4-4-0 modern was stopping often on dcc with my digitrix 51 controller.  It would run fine on dc.  I changed back to my Bachmann e-z command controller and it now runs fine on dcc.  Does this make any sense. My broadway Limited E-8 runs better with the e-z command than it did with the digitrix 51. My atlas and intermountain engines run fine with either controller.

The first thing that comes to mind is power consumption. It could be that the Bachmann controller is providing more power to the rails than the Digitrax one. Are the locomotives just DCC or are they DCC with sound?
