Just purchased a Bachmann 70 ton switcher which is terribly loud. It seems to me I've noticed this same problem in other Bachmann engines. Is this just a matter of poorly designed and cut gears or is it just something that's put up with because of such reasonable prices? I have repacked the gear and lubed the appropriate areas to no avail. Still overly loud to me. Help? ???

I turn up the stereo.  ;D

If the locomotive is DCC on Board you will hear a hum from the decoder used by Bachmann. The higher end sound value locos make much less noise when the sound is muted:

It has been my experience with MOST Bachmann diesel locos, that they quiet down the more they get run.  The old break-in rule applies. One exception is the 44-ton switcher.

I don't have the 70-tonner, but the S-2/S-4, F units, F40P, and H16-44s all get smoother as they get run, as some examples.  Just sayin'
