I have a programming track that includes a booster.  It is necessary to use the booster to program sound decoders or should I program on the main using operations mode (digitrax)

It depends on which sound decoder and which booster and maybe a few other things as well.  I have been programming Tsunami sound decoders (both the Bachmann On Board version and the after market version) with the programming output of a Digitrax DCS100 and Quantum large scale sound decoders with the programming output of a Digitrax Zephyr.  Programming on the main in OPs mode works too but you will likely have problems programming addresses, particularly 4 digit ones.  Feeding the programming track via a booster means no read back and only OPs mode programming.

My Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0s would not program on the main. I had to purchase a Soundtrax programming booster and use a dedicated programming track. Incidentally, this was the advice I received from Soundtrax.

Ray,
Could you remind us again what brand of DCC you use?  I have forgotten.

Sure Jim, I use an MRC Prodigy Advanced.
