I have all but given up on my 2X12 for a mainline. unless anyone can tell me how to make a good length mainline, should i do an industry?

Daylight4449 - A 2'x 12' layout would make a great switching/industrial scene. Couple that with an embedded switching puzzle (like, but not confined to, The Timesaver) and you would have a layout that will keep you busy for hours! My Sweethaven Harbor layout (as well as the Newburgh, Dutchess & Connecticut that replaced it) were 'yard based' and consistently presented a challenge. The N.D.& C. was 30" x 12' and was/is a fold down affair in our garage. I got tired of freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer; so the layout remains in the folded UP position. Not to worry as I have fallen head-over-heels into micro/small layouts.

Take care,
