I've done this: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=306521&nseq=14 a few times on my layout accidentally. Now I know its prototypical!

Yep, I've had my MP15DC in the same situation...too many times. I wonder whose hand they use to re-rail that unfortunate SW1500?

You all working too hard.

Take it easy and drive it back through the switch it picked.

Then fix switch.

If you look CLOSELY, you'll see the inside rail is twisted.   Driving it back through will be a matter of luck at best.   Not good.

With any kind of luck, that twisted rail has kept the rear truck from derailling.  And hopefully, it will spring back, at least part way, if you move the locomotive forward.  But more than likely, the engine crew will be getting the rerailler out and there will be a track gang there in the morning rebuilding the turnout.
