I have seen that set at train shows for as little as $200.

Well worth it by the way.  I have this set.  The loco runs well.  The passenger cars are fairly free rolling.  However, my radius is 24", and it still has quite a bit of overhang on the turnarounds.  The lights are a bit dim, but if you convert to DCC, that should solve it.  It does look really nice going around the layout.

I splurged and picked up a couple extra cars to make a complete consist.

Yes it can be converted to DCC by simply plugging in a decoder. the price is hard to say depending on what manufacture of DCC you like and what not. Bachmann Decoders I believe are $20-$30.

When i worked at a hobby shop i converted one to DCC for the layout at the shop.....my co-worker wrecked it going around a curve to fast.

are they faster than the 2-8-0 steamers because the 2-8-0 is faster than the Berkshire

When i ran it on the layout it went around a 8x12 layout in about 45 seconds. and that wasnt at top speed. nto smart to run a high speed train on 24 radius curves at top speed.....espically on a close clearance bridge.

Two weeks ago. Sorry but I could not resist the offer and I won it. Strange that no one bid before or after me

I do not have the 2-8-0, but I do have the Berkshire. It is faster than the Berkshire.
It's as fast as my F3 A-B-A Santa Fe engines that bachmann makes for DCC. By the way I do have DCC on the layout and all of my engines so it may may be different for you if you have DC
