Something that came to my mind when i was working on some things and talking to an online friend.

it took me 2 days to film this because i started at 1 A.M. for some odd reason. So if you railfanned the area, this would probably what you would see. Sorry about the noise in the background but its a basement, its rare for me to have a full operation (usually a switch job and a passenger) without someone coming down and doing laundry or something else. Either way, ENJOY! ;)

Coll video.  Clear, even at 460 resolution.
The thing that caught my eye was the decent job of editing you did.  I've soon A LOT of train vids on youtube.  Some obviously made no attempt to clean them up.  Nice change.

As for the background noise, if you had not mentioned it, I probably would not have noticed.

Just curious, what video editing software do/did you use?

I enjoyed it as well.  As for the background noise I just turned off my speakers since it was so well titled

Those are great videos :D I can see why you like the smoke feature on the 0-6-0, it looks neat. I remember the smoke from my Lionel trains when I was a kid. And your vids really show the advantages of DCC operation. A few questions:

  • Are all your locos DCC? If not do you operate a mix of DCC and DC at the same time?
  • Is the BL-2 a P2K or an old AHM?
  • What kind of camera do you use? And what kind of video does it produce?

Thanks for reading all my questions,

1. Not all are DCC sadly, i do run a mix every now and then.Actually got the 0-6-0 to run with the geeps this morning.

2. The BL-2 is an old AHM. Would love a powered one but everyone wants $30+ i got this one for a total of $6! (includes shipping from E-Bay)

3.My camerea is a Sony DCR-DVD650 DVD Handycam® Camcorder (Thats a mouthful  ;D)

interesting videos.

if i may make a suggestion.....

you may want to consider buying a couple of clip lamps from home depot. these are what i use to light my layout, along with daylight bulbs. they will give your photos/videos a bright sunlit look.

i really think you're on the right track with your videos, and the more you make the better you will be at making them. even now, i doubt many of us would do as good as you do.....

Thanks JTF for answering all my questions. Your videos are interesting regarding seeing DC and DCC locos operating on the same layout. So the 0-6-0 is DC? I noticed the headlight stayed on when it was stopped (as well as the lights in the passenger cars). I had not thought about how that would work. I suppose the light in the loco and cars "sees" the DCC power while the DC motor does not.

You've got me more interested in trying out DCC on my "railroad". I'm still catching up with the hobby. Right now I'm on a knuckle coupler replacement binge. I bought a whole card each of all the E-Z Mate Mark II coupler variations. So far it seems that the under shank medium length is going to be the most popular for drop in replacement of my horn hooks. Much of my rolling stock has talgo/truck mounted couplers and the E-Z Mates work very well in them. I have some kit bashed cars that I installed body mounts on. They work well together, however because there is enough swing in both kinds.

Yes, interior lights in rolling stock remains lighted on DCC track.  This can be a problem if there are so many lighted cars that the loco electric capacity is reduced or if it bothers you to see passenger cars and cabeese which are not being used but still have the lights on.  It can also burn out conventional bulbs long before their time.

As correctives, and if any of these issues apply to your circumstances, you can convert to LEDs or install switches.  There are sub-mini slide switches which can be installed under your cars or you can get magnetic reed switches.  These allow you to turn the lights on and off by waving a magnetic wand.  That's quicker and far less likely to derail something than reaching under the cars.  The switches, especially the reed switches, are much less costly than converting to LEDs.
