We just purchased an E-Z track starter set and some extra track to give to our son for his birthday this Tuesday.  On the track boxes, however, we noticed the California Prop 65 warning that the product contains injurious/carcinogenic materials.  Is this a reference to lead?  To something else?  What is the injurious material contained in the track?  Any details would be appreciated

If the track has a black base, the rails are made of galvanized steel.  The zinc used for galvanizing may have a small amount of residual lead in it.  Do not let your son chew on the rails or lick them.  If he or you clean the rails, he or you should probably wash your hands afterwards.  I am sure you would want to do this anyway.

Growing older is mandatory but growing up is optional.

It is a trace amount of a material that is probably present in many things around the house. As long as a bit of care is taken there should be nothing to worry about. Just do not leave children unsupervised and be sure that no young children can access any of the pieces as they may put them in their mouth.

I live in CA and they (EPA) are nuts, every building and rental has the warning  if you want to sell something in CA it almost always has the warning,  don't worry to much about the galvanizing, when your child touches a Chainlink fence or handrails he is subjected to far more then the track would subject him/her to. Just don't use the track to stir your food while your cooking and you will be just fine.

WARNING - The State of California has determined that breathing is hazardous to your health as studies have confirmed beyond any doubt that everyone who breathes eventually dies.

The solution to polution is dilution - just ask the EPA.

Or consider the fact that if you have ever bleached your clothes or swam in a pool you have been exposed to one of the most deadly poisons on the planet - chlorine.

There is nothing about a Bachmann train set that is of any danger to you or your child - unless his playmate smacks him in the head with the locomotive or he chews on the power cord with it plugged in.

Just remember - Common Sense has been outlawed by the Socialists, but I promise not to turn you in if you keep some stashed away in your brain.

I live in the People's Republic of California. Virtually every store and everything sold here has the CA Prop 65 Warning either on the building or on the item.

This is a political initiative from our liberal driven nanny government. Its only real purpose is to provide continuous employment for more state bureaucrats and their minions. With a few exceptions (Example: Drinking gasoline can definitely be bad for your health), it has virtually nothing to do with the reality and presence of harmful substances.

It is probably impossible to ascertain why Bachmann (or their Chinese manufacturing unit) felt compelled to put that warning on the product, but as others have suggested, your track is not going to harm your family nor the environment around your house. Common sense is the total solution: Don't lick or eat the track. Only use it for it's intended purpose. Washing one's hands after playing and especially before eating is considered to be a healthy practice no matter what the activity.

A True Story: A few years ago, I purchased some Biscotti at Costco. Looking at the (Texas) baking company's website, I saw a CA Prop 65 warning. I called their Texas based marketing department and asked about the warning. They were astounded. Seems their website contractor was in California, and basically put the CA Prop 65 warning on every product they advertised, just so there wouldn't be any questions from our nanny government officials. I haven't looked to see if this warning has been removed, but I can report that several years later, and after consuming many of the delicious Biscotti, my friends, wife and I are still in very good health.

So much for California politicos.
