i have a layout set up on my floor and i want some tips on it

One of the very first things you should think about is getting your layout off the floor and onto some sort of solid benchwork.

Also, regularly inspect your locos and cars if you run your trains on the floor. Little fibers can get into gears and wrap around axles and in journals and just generally screw things up. You might experience stalls, rough running, weakening locomotives, derailments and all sorts of such like. I don't think you need to do a careful examination every time you run your trains but it would probably be a good idea to do so every five or six operating hours.

even better advice, don't set your track up on carpet. if you set it up on a hard surface such as linoleum or hardwood floors. the fiber problem goes away. oh, and don't let your cat see it run.... ;D
