Am about to purchase this DCC loco...what type of work was it mainly involved in...logging or coal. Were they used in passenger service?

You might consider the N scale forum.

Why should he consider the N scale forum?   He wants to know what type of work the 2-6-6-2 did.   This general forum is the place to ask that question and get and answer.
I know narrow gauge 2-6-6-2's were used in logging but I'm sure there are more uses.

The C&O  H series 2-6-6-2 locomotives were used foe hauling coal. The scale won't matter. Most but not all of the logging mallets were narrow gauge engines.
The C&O engines had compound front cylinders and were slow drag freight power unsuited for passenger service.

They mostly hauled coal. But If you look up photos of them you will see them hauling a lot of different stuff.
