Auto Reversing Trolley Line Questions

Hello everyone. I am brand new to model RR'ing. I am building my first setup for my grand-daughters and would like to have a reversing trolley car running up and down the street, separately from the train. Do I need a special controller and/or special track to accomplish this? This is not DCC, just a standard setup. Thanks in advance for any help you can give, I'm to buy I just want to be sure I buy the correct components. Thanks again, Newbie in Indy.
