Is it true that Edward was painted in Furness Railways Indian Red before he arrived on Sodor?

It's unknown what color Edward was painted before his Sodor days, but most assume that is the case.

Was James painted black before he came to Sodor?

Yes he was. He still was when he came to Sodor in the Railway Series, but after his crash, he got painted red.
