I just bought a Bachmann Spectrum 2-10-2 with DCC. I want to add sound and according to Bachmann I should get the TSU 1000 or TSU 750 and a speaker for sound. According to the instructions I should unplug the 8 pin plug from the socket and plug in the new 8 pin plug wired with all the color coded wires in a certain sequence. But; my 8 pin plug has wires coming off of it going to a plastic peace with Bachmann's name on it. Do I still unplug the 8 pin plug and add the new one color coded with the speaker or what? Thanks for your help Roy "the new guy". All of this electronic stuff is new to me.

not having one of these locomotives (i'm a diesel man) i can only guess.    but it sounds to me like the plastic piece with the wires coming out of it is the factory installed decoder.  decoders often have their circuitry shrink wrapped.

Jeff was faster than me but if this is what you see it is your factory decoder.

The TSU 1000 is a full decoder- sound, lights and motor control.

I'm also a diesel guy just happened to look at SoundTraxx website.

Roy,

This may help.  The link below is an install of a Tsunami TSU-1000, into a 2-8-4 Berkshire.  The principle is the same.  Some soldering of small wires is required.

The fellow in the below link use to own Litchfield Station, a very good online DCC company. Look at the below link about the Tsunami. Instructions for the different style decoders, including the shrink wrapped 1000 on how to connect.
Take a lot of time looking though his whole site as there is a lot of info about many parts of DCC.
Store the link in Favorites.
