Just wandering if anyone knows what DCC module you put in a Bachman 3 truck shay that is suppose to be DCC ready. I may just run DCC and not sound. If i choose to run sound what do you use that is available. I looked on the internet and everything they seemed to recomend was not available. Thanks for the help. I have got a lot of help from this forum. It is a wonderful thing for model railroaders. Larry

The Bachmann will probably be in with an answer, or call their customer service at the following number:   215-533-1600 or FAX 215-744-4699

To run DCC and NO sound....use a Bachmann 44915 decoder. Not sure where to get them.....Walthers appears to be out of stock.

As for sound.....Walthers stocks a light logging decoder by Soundtraxx

and another specific Shay one also from Soundtraxx

Here is the Soundtraxx link as well.

I do believe one of those would work.

wounded bear,
Does that mean that the Soundtraxx is both sound and a dcc decoder? YOU don't have to buy a decoder and a sound module. Thanks for your help. Larry

As far as I know......yes.....they are a sound and DCC decoder together in one unit.

They will handle all your normal operational functions as well as give you sound tailored to your loco type......plus some advanced features like "load compensation".....a cruise control for trains, if you get the idea.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I have this wrong.

Having installed those Tsunami decoders in a few IHC 2-6-0's and having the 80t 3 truck Shay myself, I don't see how one  would fit the decoder,  speaker and wires  into the Shay tender.

Add to that the need to solder the NMRA 8 pin connector or find a way to connect the Tsunami.  I've done it for the 2-6-0 IHC. not for the faint at heart.

The new Micro Tsunami will be a  better fit when they are availlable.

And yes they are both decoder and sound chip

Does the shay have an 8-pin plug? I ordered one of these shays Thursday, and now I need a decoder for it.

The Shay has a pin connector I used a Digitrax dZ163 decoder, I think.... If you go on the Digitrax site you can look up decoders by engine application.

I drempt, I planned, I'm building

The Shay will have the 8 pin socket inside the tender. I used Bmann 44915's in mine.

Any decoder with an NMRA 8 pin plug will work.

new question-what way does the 8 pin plug go in? do the wires coming off the plug face towards the cab or to the rear? or, how are the pins counted(1-8)?

thanks
