3 and 5 pole motors for 2-8-0

I received some suggestions on purchasing 2-8-0 spectrum vs. the standard line, but how can you tell how many poles are in the engine without disassembly.  Where are these located and the purpose.   I have the spec sheet for an 2-10-2 spectrum and it shows an ass-motor. Is that one.   Thanks----Restorer
