I have a new to me old style 2-8-0 Consolidation that I would like to convert to DCC. This is not the newer style that is DCC ready nor does it have a control board. It appears to have what I have read to be a sidewinder style motor.

Is it possible to convert this or should I get a newer locomotive.

I got this as it is in the era and follows the prototype that I am starting to model.

Thanks

Is it possible? Yes, but buy a new locomotive.  It would take a lot of work to convert that locomotive and you would have a poor running locomotive. so get a newer locomotive.

If your modeling craft skills are up to it, you might consider a kit-bash.  The old Bachmann 2-8-0 is a decent representation of a Reading I-10 loco.  I might be possible to mate the old superstructure to the new mechanism.  This is not for the feint-hearted, but worth considering.
