Hey all,

I've been rehabbing a Suwanee Special Big Hauler. My understanding is that's a version 4 chassis (hump in center between drive wheels).

This thing was pretty worn out and I'm working to convert it to battery for an outdoor layout. I pulled out the old rusted/seized motor and ordered a replacement motor from the Bachmann store (link 1). Unfortunately the worm on the new motor doesn't reach the teeth of the version 4 drive gear.

I'd rather not purchase a new chassis if I don't have to - does anyone know where I can get a motor or worm that would fit the version 4? I'm kicking myself for throwing out the old motor - probably could have harvested that worm!

I considered purchasing the wheelset (link 2) or motor assembly (link 3) from the store, but both specifically say they are for version 5 which I assume won't work with my center hump.

Here's a photo indicating my issue. There's about 2mm clearance from the motor worm to the drive wheel. I guess the version 4 chassis came with a larger worm.

I went to a couple shops today looking for any pieces or advice, but no luck. One guy suggested trying to mount the motor lower on the bracket so the gears would lock in. Seemed sensible so I'm firing up my 3d printer to test out the idea before working on making something out of metal stock.

I'll update on my progress but would love any input y'all might have.

Even if you found one used, the worm gear (the other gear is just called a worm) would most likely be damaged or in poof condition...

sorry, best bet is new chassis... look on my page, that large worm gear is awful... see the pictures with the pliers

H Rob, I agree with Greg, it is like buying a 20 plus year old car and putting a new motor in it, hoping nothing else fails. Go for the chassis. Until someone tries to do that fix you propose, we will not know if it works, so chassis replacement is still the best way to go.  If you want to be the one to try buying the version 5 parts, you could cut a hole in your bottom cover to clear the gear.

Have fun, Loco Bill
