can any one tell me what the retail was on this??? do the metal valve gear ones run better??

When it came out in 2002 the MSRP was $300.  The current discount hobby shop prices are about $115 to $125 + shipping.   The metal valve is definitely more durable than the plastic.  Reasonable maintenance is necessary, such as periodic lubercation.

Anniversary versions sell on Ebay as low as $79, but may not necessarily be PRR
