here's a simple way to figure your resistance for leds
Most LEDS  are 3 volt 10ma or RGB are about 20ma   knowing these are important . To find the current limiting resistor first you need a power source   lets say  13 volts dc can be anything over 3 volts  forward voltage .  OK  you need to take 3 volts  from 13 volts which gives you 10 volts  and 10ma =.01a     take your voltage  10 volts  and divide by .01a  and you should get 1000 ohms or 1k ohms minimum

example 2      now you are hooking to a 24 volt dc source         21 volts divided by .01a and you should have  2100 ohms .
OK this is the minimum size resister you will need always add  more resistance  to dim and save the life  of the LED.

i found this on a led website  this is so easy to use  play with it  and have fun

i add a tiny bit of conductalube also   it helps out big time .  i do all my lighted passenger cars with conductalube on contact surfaces  less friction more conductivity

Heres what  i did with those type of long type of passenger cars    i use couplers  that have a shelf on them   called shelf couplers  Kadee makes them  #118 and #119 .    what happens is a small hump in the tracks lift the cars high enough to uncouple  like a switch .   one package will do 2 cars .   so give this a try      DAve

Ken when you have grandkids things seem to get put where ever  the chopter makes sounds so they fly it over the trains .  and my road is a mess at this time .  lol .

i do this  so i don't have to put sound to every loco i have.  a sound boxcar solves alot of hard to install sound

General Discussion / Re: building a burning building
February 03, 2014, 09:13:25 PM
thanks everyone    i only payed a few bucks for this building with missing roof at a train auction .   im working on my water spray right now .  fiber(or fish string ) with alight blue led  try to match water a bit  and have it shooting into the fire from a fire truck .      i whished i could find a photo of a building that was local that almost looked the same when it burned down .       Yes everyone was lucky not to loose their lives in this tradagy.  fire insurance is looking to pay out large amounts to rebuild this structure ,    they found the cause was faulty electrical wiring or overloaded circuit ,        what my thoughts would be to put this on a table top lazy susan  one scene burnning building flip lazy around and have a nice building .     well the fire trucks will have blinking lights which is another project plus the water shooting out  and some real smoke on top of it and a lot of other props for it .    will save when i get the place to build my table top layout .      i spent like 2 hrs to make this and yes the store bought ones are not even close .     i have a short clip of how the flames flicker  and i t really does look good  just need to get a lazy susan to film better   one place on the back side really look like flames with the fiber i used, its  really bright .    i post more stuff if i have time to mess with it more       DAve  ;D

I used cotton  little led flames you buy at the store, i used 4,   fiber optic  to give amber look and to hold cotton which in turn gave more color to look like the flames where higher.

i do have a catzilla  but she doesnt like the trains and avoids it if she gets in the home.  i live on a small farm  which has 2 homes on it . ill be moving to the bigger home in the future  which has a huge basement  then i redo this layout even bigger than what i have ..  right now is working on things to make a great looking one  so i can transfer things allready done.   in the meantime i do love running long trains 20 to 50 cars long with 4 running at the same time and still work in a yard moving cars.   my narrowest curve is 26  which is on my ez track section .
i also use ez track to help with my flex track curves  35.25 is most of  curves or even larger .  i run 100 car train no promblem  it circles the whole layout gets over my bridge with three locos  with the highest slope is 2 degrees  most is 1 1/2  just  4 ft of it gets to 2 degrees.  my down slope is 4 degree .   have no promblem backing  long trains  up my slopes.    i have 3 grandchildren  oldest is 4 now i do things on it to make them happy and get interested in the hobby.      all my pieces of plywood are  1/4 "  6 ft long  2 sections of flextrack .  i can pull apart  to move or store. and i even have it quartered so i can expand 4 directions .        plans are is when i go into the other home  i build my platform and set this on it  then take section by section out and replace with what a hobby system looks like.        or do you sit with a 4x8 and i had that  when i started  i out grew it quickly.

yes its different  and boy does it work  harder to run wires because you cant just stick them through a deck to wire underneath hard to set up the 4-8-8-4  a little . can i get to every location  yes .    the dirt/dust is no different than on a table  i clean every month with a wet dry vac  layout and walking areas.   and my big promblem which i fixed racoons coming down the chimney  and knocking over stuff.

im not just into trains i have a couple old tractors,  have horses ,rental homes and make time to relax is my railroad and alot of that time is running them.   i have some really nice steam  that i only bring out once in a while and seeing what others do to theirs makes me think of the day i can retire and give that a shot also.  ive been doing this for three years now and hopefully another 30 so i can show off some cool stuff in my head that needs to come out

Thanx Dave

Joe you are correct   Half bridge rectifier     have a red one one way a green one the other way  great track signals, the clear leds you can paint also .  HO is just to hard to do with big thumbs like mine.  I tryied.    heres another shot of my led button pole lamp and a sign with leds.
im going to upload more pics in my layout thread.
