Large / repairing a bachmann spectrum "Connie "
August 20, 2011, 08:48:38 AM
hi there,
decided to give my Connie a little run the other day and when i put her on the tracks..............bingo! nothing happened. it just sat there and made her neat idling sounds. i guess she broke her drive gear?????
now for the fun part. is it very difficult to repair this ? any suggestions as to where i could go to have the repair done? should i just send her back to bachmann for the repairs?
all i wanted was to just watch her go down the line a few times and listen to her awesome sound effects.
what to do...........
thanks, Rob  in Chicago

Large / QSI LIVE ACTION SOUND UNIT
January 22, 2011, 06:11:45 PM
HELLO AGAIN.
Just bought a used Bachmann circus train set and it came with a bonus in the combine car that was not mentioned in the auction. It has a QSI Live Action Sound Unit installed inside. I couldn't wait to hear it. It has "Calliope"written on the side of the speaker tube. Well after installing a new 9V and figuring out where the micro small switchs and volumn controls were I was ready to give this thing a listen but!
you guessed it . It didn't work. So my question to all of you is........are these cool sound boards repairable? Has anyone ever owned or bought one of these?
Maybe I just don't know how to use the darn thing.
Any Ideas?

Thanks Guys, Rob S.Sub.Chicago

Hi again guys,
just installed the Phoenix sound in the connie over the weekend. So far so good. table tested it and seems to work pretty darn good. Just need to give the real test outside. The Chicago weather is just not going to cooperate tho.

What I need to know is what is the smallest diameter curve recommended for the Bachmann 2-8-0 Connie? I already know I have some 4 footers that will need to replace. Unfortunately one of the sharp curves happens to be on my 10'  wood trestle. Oh well......this stuff is what makes our hobby interesting , right? ya right.
Thanks again for everyones help. I really appreciate all of it.

Large / dry transfer lettering?
January 11, 2011, 10:39:01 PM
Hello there,
Does anyone know the best place to find dry transfer lettering to use to letter train cars and buildings? I have used woodland scenics many times but they don't have lower case letters just seem to have upper case. I'm looking for both in different style letters too.
Thank again, rob

Large / Re: how do I add reed switchs to a 4-6-0?
January 08, 2011, 06:54:31 PM
Thanks Bill,  I am running DC and I never thought about what would happen if I were to run the other direction. Maybe I would be better off using LGB mags that snap between the ties and If I ever went the other direction I would just have to change Mags. I know that sounds stupid but for right now I can't afford to switch to any other control system. Believe me I would love to go RC but thats just too expensive to consider right now. I'm settling for running one train at a time with DC  trck power and control. I did pick up a train engineer and 10 amp power supply but haven't tried it out yet. I'm still new at this and learning something new every day.
Thanks again "Loco Bill".

Large / how do I add reed switchs to a 4-6-0?
January 07, 2011, 08:06:26 AM
I recently bought a used Bachmann 4-6-0 with an older sierra sound board installed. My question is...... How do I add reed switchs to operate the bell and whistle? I have no idea which wires to use.
Now, the bell and whistle can only be operated by using track insulaters or a voltage drop. I really need magnetic triggers.
Any related info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Rob

would installing the PB11 Phoenix sound system in a spectrum Connie be difficult or relatively easy?
how about the magnet triggers? What is a fair price to have this system installed. One guy told me $100.00. I thought that was a bit over the top.
Are the instructions that come with the system fairly easy to understand.
I know I'm starting to sound like a real dope but I am not.........totally.
I was told installing the magnetic track triggers are a bit difficult.
And one last question....i promise (at least for now that is).....where is the best place to purchase everything i need?
Thanks again for everyones help.

Thanks again Kevin. I'll let you know how i'm progressing.

I have used them with different engines without any problems and they should fit most track as far as i can tell. I can only speak from my own limited experience with them.
and by the way they worked GREAT!

Thanks so much for the fast comments and Kevin I really enjoy all your articles in GR magazine.
So I guess i'll concentrate on Phoenix. my Bachmann owners manual does say it's prewired and ready for an after market sound PC board. Is it still going to be an involved install? will the Phoenix system come with everything needed to use the track magnet sound trigger system? Can anyone suggest the best place to purchase a Phoenix sound system? And last but not least which Phoenix system would be my best choice?
Thanks again

Hello there, I'm the new guy and am also relatively new to G scale. I'm not a whiz at electronics by no means so the easier the better. I am looking to add a sound system to my new spectrum 2-8-0. I am currently using  track power (DC). I am not familiar with any after market systems and only just started reading up on them. Bachmann says the engine is set up for a plug-n-play system. The QSI systems seem very interesting. Are all the big name systems equal? are the whistles and bells triggered by track magnets? I have an LGB  Mogul with magnet triggers which work very well for me.
I need your help bad. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated. I'm sure I have more questions too but I just can't remember them all at the moment.
Thanks Guys!
