Thanks guys, I just wanted an answer before I buy one and find that it's junk.   Now, the loco I am looking to get is a PA Nickel Plate Road;  was it produced around the time of these wheelset problems?

     18" r. curves are the worst to couple cars together, even with the 40' replicas.  When coupling cars together on curves, the wider the curve, the better;  with longer cars, such as these, you will need even wider curves still.  Putting it all on track, it is absolutely undesirable to couple cars together on curves, since each couple is at an angle instead of straight.

     Is the Walthers line of Proto 2000 locomotives actually worth as much as they sell for?

     Sometimes the picture itself can portray a difference when there is actually no difference at all.

Bachmann has both DC and DCC for this loco.  Only certain Bachmann steamers are DCC-ready.

For me, it is a little hard to say.

My favorite railroad is the NICKEL PLATE ROAD (NKP).
My favorite steam locomotive is the N&W's class J 4-8-4.
My favorite frieght diesel is the EMD SD45. (Great Northern paint scheme)
My favorite passenger diesel is EMD E7. (also Great Northern)

As of right now, my favorite engines from the NKP are:

     Yes, without the circuit board, the eyes would move as fast as the loco.

     Well, it could be the motor hum is being reflected and therefore intensified by the locomotive's shell.  You could take the shell off and try putting some this packing foam around the metal frame, that way the shell does not vibrate against it.  Other people on this forum have done this, but I haven't yet.  It will not eliminate it, but it will soften the noise.

     Going down a grade would cause a grinding noise if the cars were pushing the loco at some point, or the down grade might be too steep.  As for slowing down, I've only experienced it when I was running it too fast and then slowed it quickly.
