It works great on large locos with tender pickup but I advise not to put it on an 0-6-0 or the 44 ton locos for example because as mentioned it insulates the wheels from electrical pickup.

What exactly is it that is wrong with your Shay's trucks?  I actually just bought the driveline kit to repair my worn out gears (I actually had bought a set of the NWSL steel gears, but ended up bending the line shaft during installation...it really ISN'T as easy as everyone says...).  Although I'd imagined it would be complicated to replace the entire driveline, it WAS completely easy...only had to unscrew two screws and just pulled the old one off and slipped the old one on...EASY!

If the gearing or anything on the "business side" of the engine is the problem, then this could be your answer.  Just refer to the schematic that came in the box with your Shay, and you won't have any problems.

Hope this helps!

Hi Matty
Yes I had to install the NWSL upgrade gears to my earlier shay, like you I have found I have not needed to replace the gears on my newer shays (knock on wood). I was looking for the trucks for a future scratchbuilding project.  I liked my converted 3 T to 2 T shay (below) so much I have been thinking of more projects down the road. The Bachmann online parts website is a wonderful tool for scratchbuilding parts.  :)

Hey Bach-man, when are you going to have stock on replacement shay trucks? Anytime in the near future?
I know you are selling the side assemblies with shafts and gears but I need complete truck assemblies.

Thanks

I guess I will eventually find out about any problems with the 3 truck climax, hopefully , mine will be leaving the States today.

I also bought the replacement gears and shafts for the 2 truck climax awhile back, and these were fitted with no problems and the loco runs fine.

Fred

Where did you buy the gears and shafts for the 2 truck climax from Dave at NWSL, He had re powered a loco for me and I had asked him about the gears for the climax and he told me he was not making them.

I would guess he got them from Bachmann parts catalog on this website.

Geared steam,
I had heard about using the 44 tonner and considered it but something made me want to try and get this running. Maybe seeing Jonathon's projects inspired me  :)

I also remember LeFever's chassis they were a little expensive but I suspect they worked very well.

This unit is geared so low that I suspect the flywheel does not do too much, I might take it out and see if there is a difference.

Take care all and stay warm

I didn't make myself clear, sorry, Ron sells motors with flywheels at his website, also there are pictures and a manual of how he does it, for inspiration and some ideas.  :)

Actually I have had several of those, the tube hooks to a flywheel, and that is all The reality is the flywheel on these never really worked well to begin with, so even if it slips, your not going to really notice much difference. These need a lot of work to get them running really well, okay if you have some time to spend, but what I did instead was to use a Spectrum 44 ton loco chassis in place of the old MDC chassis, they run like a dream, and very easy to add DCC. A man named Ron LeFever was updating the MDC chassis with a can motor, decoder and he worked the trucks so they ran quite smooth. Unfortunately his health has worsened over the years and he doesn't do these anymore, you may want to Google "LaFever Climax" for some examples.
