Title: Digitrax
Post by: adari on April 06, 2008, 06:42:08 PM
Hi,
Lately I've been thinking about getting the 8 amp version of the super chief starter set. I have a question, what kind of power pack do you need to power it? Or does it come with one?

         Thanks

You can run a DCS200 on a PS515 but if you draw any more than 5 amps, you will over load the supply.  The 515 in PS515 stands for 5 amps at 15 volts.  If you go this route, I suggest you use a 5 amp fuse between the two to protect the power supply.

When I set mine up, I happened to have a 20 amp 15 volt transformer sitting in storage.  I used a 5 amp fuse but in this case it was to protect the DCS200 against total destruction in case of a minor failure.  I could, of course, use an 8 amp fuse and probably will if the 5 amp one ever blows, but it is still holding after more than a year.

Bottom line, you can use any fifteen volt transformer as long as it produces enough current to run your layout.  But if it has a lower output current than your DCS200, or a much greater one, then use a suitable fuse as well.
