On30 / Re: 2012 On30 wish list

I'd love to see a "common, standard" side-rod loco that wouldn't look out of place on any railroad from the East Coast to California...

nothing quirky, esoteric or funky, just a plain old steam engine...maybe something like the Georgetown Loop's No.12, maybe with a standard tender or (dare I say it) a D&RG Class 45 or 47 (later T-12)

Well the 8-18c was one of those locomotives that was used around the world  ;D

Rock On!

Dusten, unfortunately, based on the history of Bachmann On30 steam locos, I think being "used around the world" is a strike against being made by Bachmann... :(

while they are described as "catalogue engines", all the Bachamnn steam engines, outside of the Porter, are based on relatively esoteric prototypes...nothing necessarily wrong with that, I just wish when they were choosing products they'd choose the more common version of a wheel arrangement  ;)

Large / Re: Problem with the locomotive of Summit Pass
December 05, 2011, 05:03:32 PM
If I am reading the original message correctly we have the same problem with the 4-6-0 from the Rockey Mountain Express set we use for the office Christmas tree. We got the set 3 or 4 years ago.

At first the loco runs for maybe an hour then stalls out, then 45 minutes, then maybe an hour, then 20 minutes, etc. We let it sit for a few hours or overnight, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.

I have been in model railroading for 35-40 years (HO/HOn3/On30), but outside of a little LGB stuff in the late 80's I'm new to large scale. I've done all the basics of cleaning, lubing and even trying different power packs, but nothing seems to change.

Is this just the nature of the 4-6-0s that come in the sets? Do we just need to get an Annie or a BBT chassis if we want the train to run for a few hours at a time?

Thanks

On30 / Re: what does everybody want after the Heisler?

I really don't think you can compare the MMI model's and their success or failure with Bachmann's...MMI is basically making "brass" style locos with cast boiler and some other parts, but still A LOT of brass-like detailing and hand crafting...while Bachmann would be making more of a mass-produced, less intricate model...so I can't see how MMI backing away from a 4-4-0 because it would have had to retail for FAR more they originally planned would effect Bachmann one way or the other

same with the BLI 2-8-0, for the opposite reasons, BLI made a poor, crude model and tried to price it like the more sophisticated Bachmann 2-8-0 (and it's not like Bachmann locos don't go for way less than their original market price sometimes too ;) )

IMO this is still plenty of room in the On30/On3 market for a good quality, reasonably priced C-16-ish 2-8-0 or 1880's 4-4-0 (or 2-6-0)

something with side rods and inside frame that would be found (not necessarily exclusively) west of the Mississippi and north of the Rio Grande...

Large / Re: 1:29 --> 1:20.3
September 22, 2011, 11:40:26 PM
it all depends on how accurate a conversion you want to make...it is a lot less of a jump converting from 1:29 to 1:20.3 than 1:87 to 1:48 and people convert loco's from HO to On30 all the time

the major changes would be to the cab and the parts that don't vary much with the size of a loco...I would suspect a scratch build cab, some 1:20.3 detail parts like headlight, stack and domes, plus maybe a new tender shell and you should end up with a reasonable 1:20.3 loco

Steamrusty - I didn't know that Athearn made 0 gauge stuff.  Do tell.  Of course, 0n3 is going to be bigger than 0n30 - the rail 'gauges' of 0n3 is a scale foot wider, allowing larger vehicles to be used.

sorry tac, that is really wrong. The gauge difference between On3 and On30 is about 4 3/4 scale inches (about 3/32" of a real inch) nowhere near a foot wider, assuming one is using HO gauge track...

and while the size narrow gauge rolling stock can vary wildly (sometimes in the same train :) )On3 and On30 rolling stock is generally about the same size...in fact the Bachmann On30 combine is a dead ringer for a Southern Pacific 3 foot gauge combine

On30 / Re: Excursion cars

too bad they don't have anything like the Jackson & Sharp excursion cars Bachmann offers in HO available in On30  :'(

on further review it appears that the whole MMI line has been/will be discontinued, and the upcoming run of K-27 will be the last PSC On3/On30 diecast, at least for the foreseeable future

seems the manufacturer has increased the price and minimum quantity to the point it doesn't make sense to continue with it  :-\

Has MMI put the 4-4-0 back on the schedule?

the last I heard on the On3 list (from some of the folks involved with the research) was that the project was cancelled and at best it might return as a brass/die cast hybrid at substantially more money.

Justin, nobody can speak to the quality of MMI's 4-4-0 since they aren't out yet (and may never be), but other MMI loco's are very, VERY nice.

and YES, I would love to see an On30 2-6-0 like the large scale Mogul

On30 / Re: Who models the post-steam era?

well it does say "/home-usa/board" on the web address for this board so I would be shocked if the vast majority here WEREN'T North American modelers

since we are dreaming...

a larger 4-4-0

a smaller 4-6-0

and an 'uneven' 4-6-0

On30 / Re: Dream rolling stock for Bachmann to produce
October 27, 2010, 09:27:37 PM
heck, you can probably kitbash or 'scratchbash' just about any piece of rolling stock ever made...but that doesn't really have any bearing on whether Bachmann (or anyone else) should sell something or not.

I'd really like to see the Jackson and Sharpe excursion cars (in Disney livery  :o )
...and some freight cars with the doors that opened to the right instead of the left
...and a duck billed roof passenger cars and matching combination car
...oh, and I don't know if this counts as rolling stock or not, but a snow plow like the RGS Plow-Flanger #2
