What is the best way to apply Turf?

There is no best. Only what works best for you. You will find, the more turf applications you do, you will find better ways to do this. Below are many possible links to look though with some you will want to keep in Favorites.

For fine turf I use no drip mustard bottles, its almost like air brushing the stuff on. I first wet the area with a spray bottle with 50/50 elmers white glue. then I lightly sqeeze away. for medium and coarse I just sprinkle it, If i want to keep it confined to an area I cut a pattern in a piece of paper then sprinkle the turf, then lift the paper off and then soften the edges if needed by pinching some between my fingers and applying it, i wait for it to dry again then one last covering with the 50/50 mix.

This is a picture from a 12" by 16" z-scale layout I used the mustard bottles to apply the turf.  please excuse the tree's the jolly green giant (me)set a book on this and smashed them.
