HO / Re: Building a yard
March 04, 2013, 05:03:23 PM
Yards can take up a lot of real estate beyond 2 turnouts and the stub length get short quickly after 2.  You used the word storage as a primary need.  I always like the idea of staging yards that can be out of sight, or on a narrow shelf.  Consider cars here as "away".   You can switch cars off the staging yard as required.    I found it difficult to get the operating complexity I wanted if I tried to fit a prototypical yard in the middle of everything.

and here is a hard learned lesson, ensure that an engine is completely within the isolated block otherwise what you program on a engine that is electronically bridging the service track to the main will go to all engines on the main as well

HO / Re: Using Auto Reversing Circuit

Yes!  The more I look at the schematic the more reasonable it seems.   I have the Bachmann TT powered according to directions and it works fine.  I wanted to add another approach to one of the TT positions that would be a pass-through to the REA building so I could spot the the B&M REA car at the platform.  The new approach caused a short.  I isolated the approach track just to stop the short.  I was looking at the reversing loop diagram and wondered if I could attach the reversing module.

Doneldon:   How does the module interface with the isolated block?

HO / Using Auto Reversing Circuit
February 24, 2013, 12:02:37 PM
I would like to have a second approach to my DCC turntable but this creates a short when the turntable aligns with the 2nd powered track.  I have isolated the approaching  track and would under the old rules create a separate wired power block with a polarity switch.  I was shopping around the DCC sites and saw an auto reversing circuit used in reversing loops.  As soon as an engine with opposing polarity crosses over on to the isolated section, the module instantly reverse the block polarity and the engine moves seamlessly through the power block.  Have I got this right or am I missing something.  In the DCC world wouldn't this be the solution?

The Bachmann TT bridge is 10" long about 70 scale feet.  The largest loco I can turn is the Bachmann 2-8-0.

I looked at a number of roundhouse configurations.  I wanted the DCC feature in the turntable and have been pleased with the Bachmann performance.  I agree that some other brands have a more prototypical pit and some a larger diameter.  I noticed that turntable has notches and then looked at the Tidmouth Sheds turntable...almost identical.  After inspecting the roundhouse structure I was OK that there was sufficient detail that some paint, soot and scenery could transform it... What I really liked was it all fit together without major kit-bashing of the Roundhouse.  Crowded by the 4 story Railway Express building, and the coaling tower it will blend n nicely.  anyone want the manual turntable?  Enjoy

B&M 1536 has been working freight here for the last month.  The air horn is keeping the locals aware of its arrival.  Also have B&M 1545 (Bachmann) and 1501 and RS-2 (Walthers).  The Bachmann items are are excellent at these prices.  For B&M lovers these will sell out fast.  Busy times.

HO / Do I need DCC Booster or Bus Wiring
February 01, 2013, 07:45:11 AM
Until recently I have been able to run 3 or 4 locomotives at the same time without issue.  I have about 100 feet of Bachmann NS ez-track.   I have added a Bachmann AMTRAK loco and 3 of the lighted coaches.  It runs for a short while and stops.  It did not short out, the Dynamis just went into stop mode.  Releasing the stop mode and the train resumes running for a short time again.  The loco and two lighted coaches will run uninterrupted, but adding a 3rd shuts down the system again.  I have cycled each coach alone or in pairs and I have no issues.  Adding the third and it stops after a short distance.  I am running the Dynamis system with a Pro-Box.  There are only two feeds to the entire layout, one to the insulated service track and another to EVERYTHIING else that is connected at a single terminal track. I have tested the coaches with all other engines and lighted cars removed and get the same result.  These Bachmann coaches are beautifully detailed and the interior details and lighting make them an impressive train.  These 3 lighted AMTRAK coaches put my system in stop mode.  Can these 3 coaches draw that much juice and do I need bus wiring or a booster (expensive) or both.   Any thoughts?   Thanks

HO / Re: EZ-Track DCC turnouts

the turn-outs do not use a loco address, there are accessory addresses used to identify the turnout.  The Dynamis can control 99 accessory items.   Once you have the DCC turnout connected to DCC powered track, press the programming button ( between the ties ) and it will cycle open and closed to signal programming mode, enter a number and press the turnout key.  It will cycle again indicating that programming had exited.  I have 14 turnouts and crossovers that work very well.  No wires!!

HO / Re: Bachmann Lighted Passenger Car

Yes that is a good idea.  I use the turntable to park items with lights, then when the table away from that slot the power goes out.  I was hoping to see if there was someone who could also confirm that the power draw from these cars is the culprit for the erratic behavior of the signal.   Systems acts up when I am running just the 3 lighted passenger cars and the locomotive.

HO / Bachmann Lighted Passenger Car
December 02, 2012, 12:02:16 AM
I recently added 3 Bachmann lighted AMTRAK passenger cars to my RR.  Is there a way to turn off the lights when the cars are idle?  I have a 3 car train and I also noticed some operating anomalies, haven't tested other possibilities, but the power has been cutting out and the signal from the transmitter is erratic.  Any thoughts?  I am running a Dynamis system with ProBox.  Mr. Bach-Man any suggestions?   Again kudos to your company on the quality and features on these cars.

HO / Re: Re-Railers????

Don...
I just looked at the track section and it is a very shallow groove on the outside edge of the track, and I am sure that the sharp edge of the flange get caught there.  I just dry tested a strand of fine DCC wire and it could work very nicely since the roundness of the wire fills the groove and would help get the flange over the rail.  Will keep you posted.

I took a close look at the Bachmann rerailer and I agree that there is a groove on the outside edge of the rail that runs the length of the track section that keeps the wheel flange from crossing the rail and seating correctly.   Thanks rbryce1
