Title: Bachmann decoders in other service
Post by: SteamGene on June 16, 2008, 05:51:12 PM
I know a decoder should work with just about anything, but will a Bachmann decoder, removed from a Bachmann DCC On Board locomotive work satisfactorily with another brand locomotive?  For instance, could I install one removed form a USRA light 2-10-2 and put it in a Proto 2000 SW-7/9?

It should work as long as
  •  The decoder is not damaged.
  •  The locomotive is not damaged.
  •  The locomotive does not draw more power than the decoder's rating.
  •  There is room to properly fit the decoder.

It's a small decoder.  OTOH, I haven't looked inside the SW yet.  May be even smaller room.  But I have no desire to add sound to my few diesels.

You should be able to do it, as long as you can fit it in there without it not meeting the requirments told.  But, it would add more realism, no matter, if you even run it or own it, and you have the stuff, you should add it.

I put a GP40 decoder/board in an Athearn GP38-2, no problem
