Stepney - not sure if you saw my comments about your layout in the old thread - but I think it is absolutely fabulous! I enjoy your attention to detail.
But I wondered why you did not include the water crane at Elsbridge.

A water crane was added after these photos were taken, it's just been a long time since i updated the photos with new ones how the layout looks now, with PECO scenic backgrounds added for detail and realism. :)
Should have new photos up after the weekend!
Good news - looking forward to seeing more.
thank you.
I will post photos of what stock i currently have that i run on the layout, most of it is Bachmann and Hornby, with some custom and scratch built models. Some videos are already up on my YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/sacredwolfie) page of my layout with a few models being given a run.
:o :o :o :o omg james he has hornby face i always wanted 2 do that but didnt know what it would look like thank u so much i think he looks sooooooo amazing
I always wondered if that was possible considering it works for Thomas and Percy.
Here's a video of mine, W.I.P. Henry's Tunnel! :D

Bugger! The URL's did not work! I have to fix that! Just continue with other topics until I sort that out!
Below is a video I took for my nephew to show him the progress of our 4x8 Sodor Island layout, that is loosely based off of the Bachmann Sodor Island demo layout they created. We also run modern American trains on there as well. The layout is very much a work in progress and isn't even close to being finished, as you can see in the video... but we're having fun building it. You can also see where I modified my layout differently from the Bachmann demo layout, if you have seen theirs in person or the pictures of it. One notable feature is that the lower level inner loop has a turnout line that goes through the mountain, and not just through tunnels on the outer portions. I also did not create the port scene at the end of the lower level, for financial reasons. Instead you can see that it is a crane yard, where I have added Cranky and the empty spaces will be a passenger station. Anyway, just thought I would share our Sodor Island progress... also named the J.B. Pepper Sodor Island (in memory of my late grandfather who is responsible for my love of trains).

LOL, yeah, no hard feelings. I also never stayed at the red cabbose but is an iconic place in Strasburg, PA, so I simply just
had to include it ::)
Here's my layout so far. And just so people know, this pic was taken awhile ago, so that's why there are some freight cars and stuff laying around the table. They have since been put away.

Thank you. Yeah, I'm sorry about the curves (not all the track I use on this layout is flex-track).
Very nice looking setup my friend. :)
Nice looking setup there, DinoNTrains, I wish I had room for a layout of that size! Just wondering, has anything changed on the layout since the photo was taken?

Nothing much has changed, to be honest. However, sometime in the future I plan to get Knapford Station. And thank you for your comments. :)
My layout is almost finished having the track refurbished, it's all been tested inch by inch and the power flow is a lot better than previously, the tracks are in the same places, with the exception that I've made some slight mods to the yard and engine shed, a tunnel is now being added as well since i couldn't add one before, and it is a two track layout now, not three, just can't run all three tracks, so down to two main tracks with the five track junction station, Elsbridge, and a couple of sidings. :)
Photos to be posted.

Both of your layouts looks really cools as well from the pictures you posted. Some very creative ideas in both, and you can see that a lot of work have gone into both as well. Would be cool to see some video of trains running on both.
Hopefully I'm about a week or so away from having a working sound equipped loco on my layout, but modern steam.. nothing Thomas... yet. :)

I met with him both days at World's greatest hobby on tour this weekend, these pictures and videos were taken on the second day. As I promised him, I wanted to show each feature of the layout to admire the Bach-man's work and effort into this and more importantly show everyone just how amazing this layout really turned out. Huge thanks to Jack for putting this video together for me.

I've been using them for years with no problems.
Photobucket is a good start, but there are other free photo hosts out there too, such as Imageshack. :)
Image hosting sites you might like.
http://imageshack.us/ - Don't need to sign up.
http://tinypic.com/ - As with imageshack, no sign up required.
http://www.imagehosting.com/ - Same as the others.
Jack
I use Imageshack mainly. Both it and tinypic don't require an account to be made.
I'll join soon.
Recently redone all the track work on the layout, some sections were defective and power wasn't properly getting to the pickups of the models, so, all new track has been laid, mostly now use SMP fine-scale track linked to PECO using dual rail joiners, very smooth running and better power.
The sidings and goods yard are the only things left to finish up, so once they are sorted, the fun part of re-ballasting the track comes next, luckily, i bought a PROSES HO/OO ballast spreader off eBay for £9.99, which is very handy and easier to spread the ballast than trying to sprinkle it on from the bags.
If anyone else is ballasting their layouts, i would highly recommend getting one, it would save time and mess! :)
I have a humble 4x6 layout:

They are a great shop I use them for all my British OO products. And their ordering works really well for me - I send him a list of what I want, and he sends an email back with a link to PayPal. Couldn't be easier.
I wish they had some of the older HORNBY buildings and engines. Anyone know somewhere with a wider selection.

You don't need credit cards for PayPal. I have it set up to draw directly from my checking account. It really is very safe and reliable.

I (well, I give my mom a list and she takes care of it :P) have been using Model Railway Imports lately, and my mom calls and orders over the telephone. I'm pretty sure she uses a credit card to pay, but I'm not sure whether or not you can use cash with over-the-phone orders. Very friendly service, I should add. I emailed the owners about special ordering a Horny model not listed on the site, and when my mom called and asked about it he instantly asked if Christian (me) was her son! :P Really nice man, I highly recommend MRI if you're an American looking for British stock :)

As ThomasFan says, they are really nice people. I bet if you ordered something over the phone, they would hold it for you until a check cleared.
Yes, they are very nice.

I happen to know they will be getting hornby spencer for a good price!
Could I be a pain and ask for a second (or more) opinions on the following matter?
I bought some Woodlands Scenic Buff & Grey ballast today, and I'm having trouble deciding which to use for the bulk of the trackwork on my layout--Grey, Buff or a combination of the two. I'm trying to aim for as much TV Series accuracy as possible.
The grey ballast is very similar to the ballast commonly seen on the set of Thomas & Friends during Seasons 6 & 7, and it did look good, althought I think it might be a bit bland in this case.

The buff ballast is more similar to the ballasts seen in Seasons 10-12 of the series, although it does resemble quarry rocks/dust somewhat, possibly making it "stick out" on the layout.

The combination mix is formed with a ratio of almost 1:1 (Grey to Buff), although there is slightly more buff. This also resembles the Series 10-12 ballasts, but I think it acheives the look better than the Buff alone.

I would definitely go for the mix. Ballast is rarely just one color and in my opinion mixing the two looks the best.

The Hornby Spencer price is already out on the Hornby homepage. He costs £99.99 and Stepney £69.99.

Well, I will not be getting him (Spencer) from model railway imports, I have got a friend going to London the day after spencer comes out and she's going to pick it up for me ;D as well as a few trucks I need for my set, like 'locomotive'--I mean the crane. She will get him for full retail price £99.00. But anyway, M.R.I. will have spencer for $165.
Anyway what did people think of my humble layout a few pages back!?

The sheds definitely dominate the layout - either the layout is too small or the sheds are too big. And honestly, with the way you have it set up, I can't see how a track will be able to get to the turntable (even if you did have the points).
A layout that size can work (it worked for the Rev Awdry) but you need to be thinking smaller buildings.
I think you should go for a mix, but have the grey dominate. The lighter shade looks like Misty Island ballast.... ::)
Thanks Rick,
Ya, the baseboard is too small. I think this will not be my final layout.

I think Caleb's nailed it, I'd do the above if it were me :) but your layout, your choice :).
Yeah Caleb, that was a really good suggestion, thanks for mentioning it. I've just gone and done a comparison of your idea against full grey ballast.
I think the mix looks good, but I'm still going to spend some time experimenting around with percentages. In the meantime, what are all your thoughts on the above?
JWR3001
Personal taste, but I like the grey 100%, but that might be because I have a fondness for the sets in S6-8.
I gotta say that I think the full grey looks the best out of all of those. Just my opinion though.
I like the grey ballest as well. The mixture looks like ballest in a quarry or something
Maybe full grey ballast on the mainline and the mixture on a branchline or siding? Just an idea. It's what I'm going to do on my new layout. :P
I like the mixed version - but having two different mixes for the mainline and branchlines makes sense, too
I must say now my opinion has changed full grey looks best, but I reckon as said earlier mixed would be good for sidings, mainline or branchline etc :P.
What happened to caleb's youtube channel, it says it's not avilable :-\ ???
I'm planning on starting a layout of Ffarquhar Station from the Railway Series soon, but I need some help. I need some good reference shots of Ffarquhar, but I can't seem to find any.
Here's my layout as of the night of March 17th, 2012.

(and btw, I hope everyone had a Happy St. Patrick's day and wore green ;) )
That looks really nice Dino. But I would be concerned about that track being so close to the edge. You're risking a fall to the floor.
Thank you RW James, and I am aware of a potential fall (especially since I have a cat). But concerning tracks falling off, I at least plan to nail them to a roadbed, and just be careful when I run trains.
Well, the thing is, I don't understand why the track is that wide there. If you cut that straight bit of set track shorter you could reduce the width and give yourself some breathing room.
By wide, are you referring to what you see at the picture's right? It's wide like that so I can put in Knapford Station. The spacing is also somewhat wide across one set of rails to the other so I could put in Tidmouth Sheds.

Yeah, that's it. I would honestly be concerned running that close to the edge. I've seen derailments on the best laid track that would land perfectly good trains on the floor.
Ouch! Then I'd better reconsider where I put things...

Well, can't wait to see how it turns out! I will post a video when the quarry is finished, but I have a lot to do. I have to add some more cliffs so the one doesn't look out of place. I have to cover the cliffs in plaster cloth, paint them, and put my rock molds on them. Then I have to lay ballast, and glue it down. But I will try to get it done so I can post an episode in the "Thomas Fan series" thread. :)

It's looking great! I actually like the new design better, ecspecially the tunnel! Fantastic work so far! ;)
Nice work there, Stepney! I especially like the tunnel. :)
Thank you both. :)
I'm also liking the van by the shed. Where did you get it?
Yeah, those changes look awesome. Especially looking forward to seeing the completed tunnel/goods yard!
I also notice you've made some markings on the baseboard between some of the tracks in the goods yard. Do you plan on putting a platform or building of some description there, and if so, what will it be?
JWR3001
Sadly no, those markings you see on the board, was originally where Elsbridge had been built, before it was decided to move the station to the other side of the board, since i wasn't able to add the road leading to the building on the hill before, but i personally think the move was good, since it enabled me to be able to add a little more detail than originally.
The tunnel is being worked on and will hopefully be ready by Monday, same with the good yard, depending on the weather and also if i don't run out of dual-rail joiners. :P
Well can't wait. ;) Where could I find a van like the one sitting by the shed? ???
I believe that van is a Dapol Fruit Van:
http://www.ehattons.com/32057/Dapol_Model_Railways_4f014004_Fruit_D_wagon_W2010_in_BR_maroon_livery/StockDetail.aspx

They're nice vans though I must say.
Alternately, eBay might have a few?

You can change the currency to USD's on thier website, I've bought products from ehattons before.
the van is 12£, 10£ for the van itself and 2£ for VAT. minus the VAT, 2£, and add the 3-5 day shipping, 3£, and it will add up to 13£. 13£ is like $20/21. so in a way that's cheaper than getting an american freight car

Woah woah woah! 20 Dollars is a lot for a van! About 80% of US Rolling Stock is under 20 dollars. I bet! In stores, how often do you see one van for more than 20 dollars! Just saying

You'd be lucky to find a well detailed, up to NMRA Standards frieght car anymore. It's well over 25 dollars for one of those good cars.
When you buy from eHattons, be sure to buy a large quantity of items so that you can save some money by getting a lot of items in one shipping load. A few times, I recall the check out process not counting VAT for me since I was a foreign purchaser.
Either way, Bachmann Thomas stock for larger vans like the Well Wagon and Mail cars prices around $16-20 on eBay anyway.
Well, for cases like me, where Model Railway stores are nowhere in sight, I have to order offline, and 20$ for a highly detailed van, compared to a Troublesome Truck for 26$, I'm fine with that. Besides, I can just order the separate faces from the parts section of this site. (No offense to you, Bachmann)

Sounds great, but add some creativity, don't go by the books. Its much more fun that way ;)
Either way, Have fun!
Also, i would like to point out that you have crossovers connecting your inner oval to your outer oval. YOU WILL NEED PLASTIC JOINERS in order to run two train at once. Don't worry, they are about 3 bucks.
Well, SA's, I knew I would need plastic joiners, but cos' I am using british points, I might not need them. I am not sure. I know I would need them if I was using atlas points! but thanks for the info either way
And the buildings will be different, cos I am using mostly scaledale, that is scenecraft, but the foiliage will be similar ;D
My goal is something quintessentially english/british:)

Everyone's Layouts look great! ;D
I hope to start making one soon, Unfortunately I don't have a lot of track pieces yet. I only enough 18" Radius track pieces to make a basic circle. Whenever I buy a new Bachmann Item, I always seem to buy an Engine or Rolling Stock, because I seem to want to get a good variety of Characters/Rolling Stock before I start working on my Layout, Although I don't have much yet... I have Thomas, Percy, James, Henry, Annie and Clarabel, Troublesome Truck #1, and I recently purchased a Mail Car and Troublesome Truck #3, But I think I'll pick up some track next time I go to my local Hobby store, to get a head start. :)

I love the layout, and can't wait to see your mountain!
just one question, what is the most tight radius? They seem a little (too) tight.... Otherwise, I think as long as your not running Gordon or Henry, you should be fine ;)
And I also love the weathering on the water tower!
Definitely liking the looks of some of the layouts here!
My layout is still in it's very early stages, its built on a preformed base made by Noch called "Konigsfeld". The base is very ideal because its small, reasonably portable, and has some nice features on it (a tunnel and a bridge). The actual structure of the base can also be expanded upon in almost at any way imaginable (e., a mountain, ski lift, castle ruin, etc), however the steep hills will cause problems with most Bachmann Thomas engines hauling loads (the only ones capable of doing so being the newer, heavier engines like Donald, Douglas and Diesel, as well as the bigger engines.).
Here is a video of the layout with trackwork and a station in place: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3u-1bo0wV8
Tonight, I just completed a ballasting test. Having chosen a blend of Grey and Buff ballast (Grey being dominant), I laid out some ballast and glued it down.
I think it looks good, so I'll be moving onto to the rest of the layout shortly. The only trouble I've had is that the dust given off by the ballast completely covers the track, turning it grey/black (it was originally weathered brown!).

Saw the video, its looking very nice!
I think personally you should ballast around the sides of the road bed too.
I've been to many model (and real) Railroad and see the ballast filling over along the sides. Otherwise, It looks great. You have a nack with those elevations, I never get them right :P

Oh yep, I have the exact same problem with the rosenhiem layout :P its a complete pain, and I have to tighten the radius towards the bridge, so Gordon, Henry and Spencer all fall off ITS A NIGHTMARE >:(.

Thanks for saying so. I do plan on ballasting on the sides of the roadbed, the only reason I didn't for this test being that it was just too hard (given that the track is on the very edge of the board). I'm going to go back and finish that area up, but all tracks further away from the edges will be much easier to do.
And yeah, the roadbed was a pain (literally--twisting pieces and then holding them down while the glue dries is like playing a game of Twister with your fingers!)

I think I've said this already, but I had the same trouble with Douglas on my Konigsfeld layout. Luckily I was able to rework the track on the outer loop, so Douglas can now handle the outer loop, but not the inner loop. Surprisingly, Gordon (and I therefore suspect, Henry & Spencer) handles both loops well...anyway, I'd love to see some photos if you have any...you know, just to see how it's progressing...maybe even help out before you secure down the track?
JWR3001
QuoteI love the layout, and can't wait to see your mountain!
just one question, what is the most tight radius? They seem a little (too) tight.... Otherwise, I think as long as your not running Gordon or Henry, you should be fine
And I also love the weathering on the water tower!
Thanks man. The radii is mostly 18", but the inside track on the double track segment has some 15" to compensate.
Ah yes and the water tower. My dad actually did that (my weathering skills are subpar) He's sure got the eye for detail.

Dude, I like the design, but How big is the board? In order to fit all the curves and things you have planned, you be looking at 5-6 feet wide by 10-11 feet long....
It looks great! but there just might not be enough space for it all.

I can try to make some space. Me and my Dad just need to clean the whole basement, and get rid of some old stuff from that room.

so you just add a 1x6 shelf along the front where the track gets close to the edge.
You can also add a few inches of plexie glass
Thanks veryobw for your comments! I think I may just add a little peice of foam (about half a foot) out in that spot. Thanks for pointing that out guys! It's just begun! I'm going for a small town USA flare. Here's a drawing on where it'll be:

if you are going to add a foam extension, you'll need to protect it with something solid. why not just make the extension solid in the first place? it's way easier.

Full shot right here. :) The hopper is going to be on the track closest to the sheds, about right across from Bill. Also, about your layout, the bridge is looking really cool! I always liked elevated tracks, and underpasses. What kind of ballast will you use? Isn't working on a layout fun? :P :D

Nice work guys on the layouts. Has anyone tried to actually build Sodor Island true to the story? I am planning a layout and hoped to find some examples of modeled Sodor. Any help would be appreciated. I have found maps on the Thomas sites but trying to translate them to an HO layout is not the easiest. Any thoughts? Thanks.
depends on what your talking about, RWS or TV series? I'm still in the process of building my layout and it's going to be TV series based with some RWS references like I'm planning on putting FQC (Ffarqhuar Quarry Co.) and NW on the sides of some trucks, and putting some posters for the Talyllyn Railway, Isle of Man, Coronation Scot, and a poster for The Three Railway Engines on the platform of my station. so far i have Great Waterton, Brendam Docks, and Tidmouth Sheds. I want to add Anopha and maybe a narrow gauge line.
@SodorAdventures Your layout is awsome!!! :)

Sweet! Thomas' eyes seemed a little scratched....
Loving it. Especially the bridge. :)
The track near the wall concerns me. I'm just a little worried that there is not enough clearance for certain locos, or cranes, to make the bend without smacking the wall. Similar concern goes for the bend hanging over.. nothing. Derailment could mean disaster, much worse than tapping the wall.
But other than that, I think the layout is coming along great. I love that it's not just an oval, instead making a sort of mushroom-shape, and thus more interesting to look at.
The sheds seem to take over the layout, dominate if you will(I recall someone else said that too?), but I imagine as more buildings and scenery goes in it won't be such a big issue. Do you plan to use the space next to the turntable as a yard, take advantage of some of the other track connections on the turntable, or do you have other plans?
As I said before, your layout's coming along great. Keep up the good work!

Thank you! :) Now, in answer to your concerns (which I thank you for):
a.) I never considered the wall to be an issue, so thanks for pointing that out.
b.) The curve over the edge: don't worry. That will be fixed eventually, for I'm planning to put som more wood on the left side of the layout, thus, I can move the track over and have a little more room. But also, my tracks are of different codes (100 [I think. What code is Bachmann's E-Z track?] and 83, respectively), so derailments are an issue there. So I'm looking for solutions as to fix this problem. I will also be using cork roadbed to help keep tracks in place.
c.) Regarding the space between the turntable: I will be connecting track to the rails to the right of the entry track. And also, you've opened the door for possibilities as to what I could put in the space (though I may not have enough room for a yard). :)

Yes, I know there are some bumps and uneven joints in the tracks, but I'll fix them eventually. Now, since my last pics, here are the changes:
*My dad added the extension to the left-hand side of the table. Now I have a little more room and don't have too worry as much about my trains taking a nasty tumble.
*My dad also added a shelf at the bottom.
*There is now a triangular piece of wood at the right-hand corner of the "T", so now some tracks that were over the edge are now on firm ground, and I can rest my controller there.
*I added an extra track, which will have a tunnel.
I hope you like it. :)

Hi everyone. I have a few more pics of my layout. Enjoy :)
Here, I hope to make a tiny dockyard, as you can see Bulstrode. I hope to put in Cranky the Crane, too. However, it all depends of if there is enough room.

I have some sidings for a quarry in this pic. Here, you can see Percy shunting.

Dino, I must say that you layout is coming along quite well. I think the size of the layout you have is perfect, because you can fit many of the main parts of Sodor on it. Cant wait to see the layout with some ground cover, but don't rush it! :)
Thanks SodorAdventures. Much appreciated. And your layout is coming along very nicely, too. Keep up the good work.

Not a problem! Just for those of you who didn't see it, It was on the preceding page, I'll move it here now:
As for me, I have mostly finished the new addition to my layout and tore up the old section for a complete revamp. Pictures below for the another...
SodorAdventures Update!
Each picture will have a caption to tell you what will go in that spot.
The quarry!!! The one furthest back is the one that connects to the elevated track that loops over the new section. The two closer ones are just sidings for the rolling stock. Also in the 2nd and 3rd track, a coaling plant will be put over. You can see the foam in between to level it. Here is what the coaling plant looks like:
And when its built:
Tell me how you like the coaling plant!

A farm, I will use my mat idea to reenact grain around the line. There will also be a grain co-op, shown in the picture, and a barn with a farmhouse.
This will just be a mountain. The spur that goes through the tunnel will open up into the yard, which you might be able to tell.

A 2% grade for a river to go through. Pretty much just a hill to go over the river. Not too much over there yet.

This is a junction. I am not sure what to do in that corner. Any ideas for that would be appreciated :)
So, thats whats new on the set. Questions, comments, and suggestions are greatly appreciated!
How about an american signal and signal box? The layouts looking awesome, especially the coaling plant. :)

I've mentioned this before, but I really think it bares repeating... That track is WAY too close to the edge. Equipment WILL fall off the table - guaranteed. If you use flex track you move it back an couple of inches. No track should ever be closer than two inches from the edge.

Indeed, that did seem a little close, but I think It shouldn't be too hard to pull the track in more. Good catch, RW.
your track will fit better if you use a #4 switch in place of that 22"r one. the switch angle will be about 12 1/2 degrees instead of 30, your dock track will be further from the table edge, and you might even be able to fit two tracks there.
Thank you all for your concerns. Once again, I have completely forgotten about the dangers of being too close to the edge of the table :P But, however, like I mentioned, it all depends on space. So I might rework it a bit or do something else (idk), but again, thanks for pointing this out guys
lol, your layout looks like mine right now: stuff scattered EVERYWHERE. only difference is, your working on yours, and mine is sitting idle ::)
lol :P
Some Pictures of the castle ruins on my layout, I didn't know where else to put them. I'll take some better pictures soon but this is all I've got at the moment :) :P

Thanks. They took me the most part of the day to paint and weather so it's nice to know my hard work is appreciated. But the paint and weathering slight touch ups, I'll upload some photos of it at about 30% complete as that's the only time I thought to take pictures DURING painting and weathering. LOL, so much like me :P.

Well my secret was sprinkling dark green grass on it when the paint was fresh, if anyones intrested about paints, I used model master dark slate grey for base, then covered with testors flat grey, and finally all wooden surfaces were covered with testors wood paint :). I'll post pictures soon, provided imageshack behaves itself ;).

Your layout looks amazing! The castle ruins remind me of the ones seen in Season 2:
when you get a closer look their not that close to the season 2 ones, I wasn't even going with thomas based design, I was going for a personal "real world" touch but thanks for the compliment, any constructive criticism for me to consider ;D ;) :) ?
I don't like how dryaw station does not belong to me!
Have you given any thought to the buildings/scenery elements that you might position about the layout (other than the tents, station, castle & windmill)? Anything concrete as of yet?
I've just ordered a Wills Post Office Kit for my layout, as I feel its very "Sodor-esque" and fits the village concept very well. I also know that I'll be paving the road way around the layout with Woodlands Scenics Smooth-It, and I'll also be creating a Railway crossing at the far side of the layout with the same stuff.

well since I'm working on a 6x4 foot I have some extra space up the front and on one side, so up the front I might build an extension over there to have platforms for dryaw on both sides of the railway line, and the road inside might be converted to an n guage track with a siding that leads into a tunnel so the engine can get home, and another section of n guage track up the front that goes to the side where an extension will be built with some sidings with freight and trucks, I decided somewhere on the layout harold is also going to have his own helipad, but most of this isn't concrete, but plausible ;) .
On a different note does anyone here know if there's anyone out there who sells skarloey railway engines and stock, like a few people used :) any help is greatly appreiciated :) .
Oh I almost forgot, on my layout there is a house which is just the hornby (thomas range) country station building :) .

Hello,
I must say the layouts I have seen are wonderful, each and everyone. I am starting a layout myself here pretty quick and I will make it "Thomas" themed. Your layouts are kind of, inspirations to what I can possibly put on my layout. Like I said before, great layouts, love each one.

Seriously though, the layout is coming along nicely...sounds like you have some very ambitious plans for your layout (although I seriously doubt you'll find any N gauge Skarloey Railway stock for sale--sorry).
I also notice that your Windmill Kit comes with the stuff needed to motorise it (which is a whole lot more than I can say for the Dapol Windmill)...I must say I'm looking forward to seeing that happen once its completed.

Well I know there were people out there who could make them for you, don't think there are anymore, but a small section of that post got cut off where I asked if anyone knew if people still make them for you.
The Model Power windmill is n guage so it is slightly out of guage, and the colour it came in make me want to be sick, so I'll be doing some repainting, sometime soon. And James, Dark blue blur? I think not ;).

No no, you're definitely right, now that I think about it, there are still professional scratchbuilders/model builders who will do this sort of thing for you (I've contacted a few myself in the past), although my guess is that they'll charge you quite a lot of money to build the models for you--in some cases its not economically viable (and you may also be required to include plans/drawings of what you want).

Do you still know who they are, it'd be nice to get an estimate, but if all else fails, I'll pray for bachmann to make them, and then try to build them by observing what people who've done this sort of thing do :) ;) :D ;D .

Sorry for double posting, but does anyone have any constructive critisim, any at all? I could do with some, because if I do this in future I'd like to know how I can possibly lift my game a little :) .

Well, since you asked - I really like the castle ruins and the placement on the layout. I do NOT care much for the huge boulders you placed around it. They might look better if they were set deeper into the scenery. But they honestly look like they're just placed on this hill, which, of course, over time, they would roll into the valley below.
Good idea with the N scale windmill. You might be able to make it work if you enlarge the doors. I've seen the same kit in my hobby shop and have honestly considered buying it just to get the motorized unit to put into my Dapol kit. But the price seems prohibitive. I'll be looking for other options.
Other than that, your layout is looking good.

There just there more so because I wanted something to fill up bit of space due to myself not having not much grass to use at the moment but hey thanks anyway :) .
The n scale windmill was actually quite cheap, hitting around $30.00 but I'm a member of a local train club so I get 10% discount there :) .

Sorry, but $30 is a bit pricey for a motor when I already have the Dapol kit - even with the 10% discount. But I hope it works out for you.

True I guess, but shopping around on ebay or something like that could reduce the price alot, I don't shop around alot and usually when I'm in a hobby store I walk in clueless about what I want unless I've really thought it through, but I know that windmill is cheap, because it could've cost me double easy if it wasn't in the first hand bargin box ;) :D
sorry I'm going off topic. back on the 9th i ordered a Hornby Murdoch and he came on Wednesday. I must say he was worth every penny. sprung buffers, great detail, electric pick ups in the tender, great hauler, DCC ready, there is not one bad thing i can say about this model. He looks really nice with the rest of the Bachmann fleet. To my surprise he was shorter, in length, then Bachmann Spencer. :o He also fits on the Tidmouth turntable and can fit inside Tidmouth sheds. the only thing, when backing him into Tidmouth, his buffers catch the door a little bit. If i push in his buffers then the doors close, so i guess it's a good thing that he has sprung buffers. He also can go on 18" radius curves.
did you get it at Hattons or model railway imports? I'd rccomend model railway imports
Hattons. i feel like most of their stuff is reasonably priced. i mostly use Hattons. if Hattons doesn't have what i'm looking for, then i use Rails of Sheffield. I can use paypal with Rails of Sheffield too. I have certain sites i use from here (US), the UK, and Australia. Model Railway Imports i'm iffy about, because of payment. i was thinking about using it soon though.
They are very exellent! Because mum and dad don't have credit cards, she does this
1-She sends a list of what she's buying,
2-the man (steve) calculates an invoice with shipping to BC,
3-And my mum does an e-transfer via CIBC (or another major bank)
4-and he ships it the order that day, or the next buisness day. Mail only comes 5 days a week north of the border.
The added incentive for me, is that I don't have to pay duty, and exchange rates.
I whole-heartedly reccomend them!

Model Railway Imports uses Paypal as well. Very simple - you email the order, he sends back by return email the Paypal link and you're good to go.

Thanks. This is probably the style the series will have. I'd like to incorporate as much detail, as possible. I have only been using blender for 5 months, so I have incredabley primitive skills. I anticipate working at nitrogen if I don't move to Britain (see u there Caleb!). I am working on the gargantuan task of making these sets. I need to make rolling stock soon. Which I may outsource for the most part.
looking good shawn ;)
Thanks! I don't mean to brag, but I think I was born to cgi animate!
That's cool, do you want to work on Thomas?
The story goes somewhat like this....
2007-I want to move to london and work on Thomas!
2008-Great! I can commute to Vancouver (cos I live a float-plane ride away) and work thomas!
2012-Nothing is worth living in Toronto. no offence to people who live in Toronto.
So Basiclly, I'd love to, but I don't want to live in Toronto!
Well Thomas is not being produced my nitrogen anymore it will now be Arc Productions. I don't know where they are maybe that will be better for you.
I want to work on Thomas too! A storyboard artist, I do strory-boards for my model series!

I want to work on thomas as an animator, I probably could work on Thomas if I got over my Toronto dis-like. Or I could work with hit-entertainment working on Thomas. In that case I live in England!
i always wanted to work on Thomas too. if i don't become a mechanical engineer then I want to do voice overs, mostly on Thomas. ;)
yeah I wouldn't mind working on Thomas as either a voice actor or a writer

Looks good Caleb. The ballast looks a little large - but otherwise - well done!
Thanks! Well, I didn't feel like buying it in the bag this time around, so I got it from my alleyway. :P
Might want to clean your track/ Thomas' conductors, seems to be studdering a little, other than that, looks good. I like the way you weathered your freight cars, very classic Thomas looking
Thank you! Yes, it's the ballast getting on the rails. A few cleans and some more running should get it moving smoother.

Thank you Brandude! :)

What about Toby?
Toby lives at Aresdale End.
Just what I was thinking. But hm, maybe.
I think the sheds would look more closed-in than normal if you got all those stalls for it, but at least your engines would be well accommodated. :)
I think, with the number of add-on stalls you'd need to get, that it might just be better to get a second full Tidmouth sheds set, and use the extra turntable somewhere else on your layout. Just my thought.
Has anyone here actually filled their sheds with all the stalls or possibly seen a full tidmouth sheds before?

But if you're using the roundhouse version of Tidmouth Sheds, then you are modelling the TV Series, so Toby would still be at Arlesdale End. ::)
Yes, but who says you have to base it off the TVS or the RWS. You can make your layout how you want it.

Exactly. You can have as many stalls in Tidmouh Sheds as you want and have Toby living wherever you want. That's why this hobby is so fun. ;)
DinoNTrains please do me a favour and measure across all 7 sheds at their widest point and from the back of the centre shed to the front of the turntable. I have a full shed and 2 additions unbuilt for my grandsons layout and now wondering if I have room on the main layout or I might have to build an add on portion just for the sheds, kinda modular.
Thanks

Thought you all might be interested in seeing pictures of my rough-setup for MY new layout...
A Sodor-themed layout, it is set to consist of 4 locations from the TV series, being Great Waterton, Henry's tunnel (an undercover fiddle yard), Dryaw and Brendam Docks.
Photos below show my rough setup plan prior to the boards being frames and the final plan being drawn...

Thanks- don't worry I'll be posting updates as soon as they occur.
And yus that will indeed be Derek. Had him only a week or so now but a FANTASTIC model I must say!
Hello Everyone,
I love the photo's of layout progression. I might join in on the fun.
I am in the middle of drawing out plans for Ffarquhar station and yards, based on the C. Reginald Dalby's illustrations. Since I live in the USA so I'll have to build my own stuff. I'll use Bachmann Thomas and fright stock though because Bachmann's Thomas model looks like Dalby's illustration of Thomas.
Since the holidays are coming as fast as Nascar drivers, I won't be able to work on the layout right away and I'm still laying out the track plan and benchwork design. I'm very excited myself, I love a yard layout for shunting trucks around.
Good luck on future updates & Happy Holidays!
Alex Wittman
Sounds like a good project. You may not have to build the station if you can find a TOMY one on eBay. :)
Thank you for the suggestion, but I prefer having almost everything to scale on my layout. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great idea, but the thing is Tomy building's are out of scale by a few centimeters, I personally would like to build my own because I'm the type of guy who loves to work with my hands and what's building a model railway without a little adventure?
I'm not putting you down, if you like using tomy buildings on your layout, it's a great idea, but it's not my cup of cocoa, if you know what I mean.
Thanks again for the suggestion. ;)
Hey Whittman,
I totally get where you are coming from. I am the same way. If you really want to go all out for a Thomas replica Ho scale station, try to find the old retired hornby maithwaite station kit. Its a total of 3 parts. 1 platform, and two buildings. They show up on ebay now and again. Hornby also made a dryaw station, I have that one, but it is more difficult to find.
Dryaw station:
Maithwaite (on a layout):
Thank you Sodor Adventures for the helpful advice. I wish I could purchase those items off of ebay, but the thing is I don't have an ebay account, nor will I ever, I just don't do internet auctions.
Another thing is, I live in the USA and Items like that and where I live is pretty hard to obtain, it may be easy on the east coast, but I live in the pacific northwest closest to the west coast. I really appreciate the tips and suggestions, but I would like to replicate the station building the way Dalby illustrated it to be, and I am aiming to have the layout be 85% accurate, the track design won't be exact, but close enough.
I feel very happy to know there are a lot of helpful people on this thread who look out for each other.
Thank you, very much! :D
I want that H****Y (we are not supposed to say the actual brand name) Dryaw and maithwaite stations, They are beautiful. I am lucky enough to own three of the great waterton buildings though.
Yes I agree both Dryaw and Maithwaite are amazing addions to any layout. hope I can get them again once I restart my Collection. :( miss my engines

Very good Layout DinoNtrains, the sheds and knapford look wonderful. Merry christmas to everyone and a happy new year as well :D .
Looking good.
You are the first guy I've seen with a complete half circle of sheds (9) could measure the full width and from front of turntable to rear or sheds? Thanks
@AJW98Productions: Thank you! Merry Christmas to you :)
@AndyJB: Thank you, and I'll get right to measuring the dimensions of my Tidmouth Sheds
Knapford looks really nice!
It is very nice indeed :D
And here's Cranky at the docks:

And AndyJB: The measurements for my new Tidmouth are 27 1/2 in. (from the turntable to the rear of the sheds) and 40 in. (from one end of the sheds to the other.)
Thanks DinoNTrains for the measurements.
Man that's pretty big, I had planned on an additional 36" X 48" module for the round house but that allows little room for locos to round a curve once on the module before they will hit the turn table. I'll have to sharpen my pencil again and work something out. ;D

Fantastic! Post more if you can, I love those buffers, where did you get them?
Thank you!
Those buffers are scratch-built. Some styrene and Bachmann UK's buffers.
I'll post more pics when more is done
Nine stalls at Tidmouth? That's a lot of space!
I think the layout looks good so far, DinoNTrains. Seems very focused on the 'main' locations, ie the Docks, the sheds, the Big Station, etc. It appears very compact in the picture(below Henry at the sheds), and that's very good if you have limited space to work with.
Also, I really like those buffers, Bass'. They really give the layout a Sodor 'feel'. :)
I really like how it looks so far.
Well I'm back working on my Grandsons layout. Most of the track is down just a couple of branches to finish. We are trying to add some Misty Island features like the Shake Shake bridge and the end of track feature where Diesel lost the Jobi wood and almost went in the sea himself. Next is to run the bus cable, droppers and start converting the locos to DCC/Sound and the rest of the rolling stock to KD couplers.
Hopefully it will be interesting enough to post photos soon.
This is sounding good. Your grandson is a very lucky boy!
BassTbone, your layout is looking incredible. Keep up the great work!
I wasn't planning on posting this project here for another month or two, but I changed my mind :P I have stripped my layout down to nothing and restarted. It will be a 10x12 layout, and I've recently laid the track on my former 5x10 layout.
January 27th: Majority of Tidmouth's trackwork laid, station platforms marked off.
January 28th: Leads from both ends laid, through tracks laid, donor signal box in place (will be replaced with a Metcalfe signal box), signals temporarily in place, and Arlesburgh Branch platform marked off. Ignore the clutter along the right side. Had to move everything on the floor while I tore the previous layout apart, and had to put everything back on the layout so the entire room could be rearranged before the rest of the benchwork gets built :P
(http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn192/ThomasFan247/792249_577437842285574_1424210932_o.jpg)
Haven't laid more track and such as I've yet to extend the benchwork and level out this board, as there is a prominent dip in the center when looking at the layout at eye level. It'll be a big project, but hopefully it will basically be completed by May or June and the series can re-air this summer. More updates coming soon :)

Lot of work lies ahead, but I can almost guarantee that it'll come out great :) 10 x 21 is quite big, have you thought about doing a room layout with just 2 ft out along the whole room? Anyways, cant wait to see more of the new layout!
Thank you! :) Actually, it's a 10x12, not a 10x21, but that'd be pretty awesome if it was! :P
Ooops, looks like I was reading a little too fast :P But still, 10 by 12 is a nice plot of land for a train set. :)
That's fabulous! Although, personally, I stay away from building layouts without at least one loop. Cos I love to run my trains fast!
Thanks :) The layout actually will be looped. Here's a picture of the tentative plans for those interested:

As you can see, Tidmouth's track layout differs from the original plans. Honestly don't care, as I'm basically just going with it as I go :P

Christian
Was wondering when you'd get around to posting this here. :P I've said it and I'll say it again. This just blows everything out of the water. You have superb skills in many areas, and this area is certainly one of your best! Can't wait for more, my friend!
Hey guys, why not a layout update!
Here is my track plan, of the layout I started in October 2012.
Here is the benchwork, and all the track laid down

And for those you wondering where my Thomas and DVRRS trains are, they are still there, but I just didn't have them out for the pictures.
Comments and questions greatly appreciated.
Looks like that door is gonna be a hassle. Did you build that straight section to be able to lift, or at least is the door pulled away/pushed away from the tracks instead of going towards them? Might be an idea to consider building that kind of lift for that specific area if you ever plan on using the door, even if its gonna be a year or 2 down the line till you open it. It'll save everyone's back some bending that isn't needed. ;)

Oh, yes, it is a door we use like twice a year, but made it a lift section on a hinge, and it is tested working fine. Thanks for the comment.
Looking great so far Tanner, can't wait to see what you do with that open space on the loop. :)

Hi Guys,
I am new to this forum and more specifically to model trains. I have loved Thomas the train ever since I was young, and now that I am older I am interested in Bachmann trains and layout concept, to say the least. I wanted know if you guys have any tips for me on how to make a layout? How to wire track, use several lines of track, etc. Thanks for all your help.
I too am finally working on a new layout.
I have been planning a large set-up for a few years but am still waiting for my shed to be cleared before I can start, so I've made a start on building a small layout at the moment. Scenery will be completed fairly soon I expect and then it's a few little touch-ups to finish it off.

It's not bad I think. Pleased with how it's progressing in such a short space of time.
Coming along nicely!!! One tip: Before going too far, paint the table a green color. Get a can of paint at a hardware store. It makes less work for when you need to cover the ground, and all the fancy buildings and such are all placed there.
I've painted the majority black to ihht as it happens as the exposed surface will mostly be roadway. There will be a small field which ill sort over the coming days.
Looking good, RailwayInspector!! By the way, when did you get a Bachmann James?
About a week ago- good model, if a little weak. Swapped the face for the hornby equivalent as you can see which makes him look much better too I think.
therailwayinspector, your layouts coming along nicely.
Is it possible to cut the eyes out of the Hornby face and swap it with the Bachmann like many people have done with Thomas and Percy?
I believe so, but I'm not planning to do that at the moment, not until I have a spare face.
That is so cool I have never seen Tidmouth with a half circle! Personally though and this is just my opinion I prefer the seven Stall Tidmouth but if I was to change my mind I would do what you did that is neat!
Can someone help me with layout ideas?
Hi all- remember my layout from the last page?
Well look at it now!

There's some very nice shots here of the layout, and it looks to be coming along very well!
I like how Bulstrode is tilted- his face makes it look like he's about to fall over!
I also rather like the bottom two images. They look busy and full of life, and I like that a lot. :)
Very nice layout!! Any plans one getting Bachmann Percy and or Thomas?
Maybe, though not sure yet- I have the Hornby ones which are, in my opinion, pretty good so no urgency to get the Bachmann versions at the moment.

Looking good! I especially like the mountain. :)
That's the shiniest mountain I've ever seen :P
Having said that, I like how it's progressing so far. Hope to see more soon :)
More is on the way: try T-minus one hour for NO shiny mountain.
I look forward to seeing the non shiny-shiny mountain. :)
Well, since my Grad program has started, I have been working on my layout, a 4x6 portable sectional layout. Lots of things have been done. Working on the scenery!
I didn't photograph big areas, as it is under construction and I want you to see final product.

That's a nice Harvey Model- wherever did you get him??
Some lovely photos there- certainly looks like a very interesting layout indeed!
Sodor Adventures, yours is coming along nicely too!
Harvey is made by Bandai. He looks to be perfect size for HO/OO.
Thanks for the complements!
I'm guessing Harvey's arm is stationary, or does it turn?
It turns actually. The whole mode disassembles which makes it easy to cut for chassis room.
Your Layouts are coming out nicely I can't remember who did it but someone had done an exact copy of a scene from the original thomas and friends awesome job!

Hes right Harvey looks like he was supposed to be a narrow gauge engine but changed his gauge at the last minute nice try though
He seems little small but he doesn't look too bad.

Thank you very much! I don't have a track plan made up at the moment, but I will be out of school by the end of the week so I will try to have one up soon :)
As I've said before Christian, this looks very, as Dan would say it, "Orsum". This layout is a huge improvement over the old one, and that's saying a lot! :D

Excellent! Good to hear! I may post layout photos soon of my layout in it's current state. I'll keep everyone posted on that. :)
Thomasfan247;Cool layout dude!Love to see more pics and a track plan!!!
OLD GEEZER,
UPTODAY
First off I'm loving all the layouts here.
Secondly, if anyone remembers I posted my layout here a little while ago and was surprised by the positive response I got. I was happy, however it is a prebuilt layout and the incline is too steep and the radius is too tight for 2 of my favourite engines real life engines (the "Flying Scotsman" and the "Mallard"), Gordon and Henry as well :(.
So I am devising a plan for a layout I'm making, and after that 2 sets, one of which will be a cross between a railway series/TV series shed (a turn table leading to a railway series like shed) and then a station terminus, made to look like knapford, but differently set up. I shall draw up a track plan (albeit hand drawn and most likely poor quality) when ever I have enough time to draw up and think one through enough.
More pictures!
Wanted to give a look of the layout...

It's spelled "City Of Truro". And great layout and photos BassTbone.
The both of of you have fantastic looking layouts, how big are they?
Mine is 10x10 with a 3x3 hole in the center for controls :)
Mine is a 4'x6' that divides into two sections for portability. The legs are PVC pipe that screw on. It is held together by using wing nuts and wooden dowels.
Over this past weekend, I've managed to basically complete the Wellsworth and Knapford sections of the layout. Here are some pictures, and I hope you enjoy :)

Any comments are welcome! :)
Christian, your work always blows me away. ;D Never ceasing to amaze. ;)
Christian your layout so far looks amazing. I love the shots of Edward and Emily noticed Trevor too a very nice touch. Can't wait to see it all once completed
Thank you very much! ;D Hopefully there will be more by the end of the week :)
WOW! This is something to be proud of!
Any particular season you are modeling or is classified as just Sodor?
Thank you! :D I'm modelling mostly based on the RWS illustrations by Clive Spong, but I'm also adding my own touches here and there :)
amazing detail! :o i look forward to seeing other parts of the layout! and is that Heljans Hymek model?
Thank you very much! ;D And yes it is :)
Short video anyone? :)

Very nice layout!! Are you planning to have Tidmouth Sheds and Knapford Station on your layout?
Thank you! :) I will have Tidmouth sheds, but not the roundhouse. I have a Bachmann Scenecraft shed I'll be using :) And the second station in the photos I've uploaded is Knapford ;)

Very nice! Im sorry I meant the kit that Bachmann sells of Knapford station. :-\
Ah, that's quite alright. No, I will not be including that kit on the layout, but I may purchase it to use for smaller sets :)
Anyways, if anyone is interested on seeing Knapford in action...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eols7tWyYt8 :)
Looks great, as always! By the way, what did you use for the brick wall, I mean what company makes that? Honestly, it looks awesome!
I still want to buy knapford and turn it in to tidmouth station. I'm determine it can be done!looks awesomeas always Christian :) just echo what sodoradventures and.everyone else says lol excellent work my friend. Your a credit to the forum
Thanks very much, both of you :) SA, I actually just found a high-quality picture of a brick wall online, printed and cut it out, and pasted it to the backdrop :)

Hey guys I plan on building a new layout resembling Thomas's branchline. Design or scenery is not an issue, it's power and track. What do you think is the best way to power an entire layout with AC/DC control I heard that soldering works preaty well, but I'm not sure how to do that. How do you guys power your layouts? Also what track brands would you recommend? Simierski from YouTube recommends PECO Code 100, what are your thoughts? And finally what are your oppinions on DCC, is it worth it? Are there any good tutorials to convert your locos to DCC? Any specific benifets from DCC?
Hey, you asked a lot of valid questions. I can give a little advice and that is to say stay away from peco. Aside from its' ridiculous cost, its not better than atlas flex. In fact, atlas code 83 flex track is better than the peco. Anyway, I would also stay away from DCC for now because it is a lot more complicated. I'll be back and edit this with more, as now I have to go!

Thanks Tanner, I look forward to more tips and info.

I can't advise on what brands of track to use, as I make my own.
soldering is easy to do with nickel silver track. steel rail is very difficult to solder to.
as for dcc, there are numerous advantages providing you are using a full featured dcc system. I say that because there are a few low cost systems with very limited features which largely negate the advantages of dcc. the advantages to me are the ability to run more than one train on any track, without regards to electrical boundaries (known as blocks),,,,,the ability to program your locomotives with the operating characteristics you prefer, such as top speed and momentum effects......the ability to program your locomotives to run exactly the same as others in your fleet. this is especially useful if you run diesels, which often run in groups in north America. a full featured system will allow you to run several locomotives under one address as though they were a single locomotive just like the real ones......

I wouldn't say that Atlas is necessarily better. For what it's worth, it most certainly does the job and looks great. I use Atlas code 83 track myself, and I love it. But Peco does have its advantages.
1) Peco track is more detailed than Atlas, specifically when it comes to the spikes and rail heads.
2) Peco's track comes in code 100 and code 75, prototypical to British railway modeling. Though Atlas' code 83 rails look just fine, they are (prototypically) wrong.
3) Peco's track utilizes the bullhead structure seen on British rails. Atlas uses the flat-bottom rail typical in North America. Again, this makes Atlas track the 'incorrect' track because of the prototype. Here's a comparison of the two rails:
4) The switches made by Peco are powered by a spring that throws the point to one direction once it passes the center point. This snaps the moving tongue (moving part of the points that guides the train in a specific direction) against the stationary rail. This allows the lack of point motors and switch throws. Atlas track, however, does not use a spring, so the switch will only loosely stay in position. A stray bump or imperfection of a flange could push the tongue out of place, causing a derailment or allowing the loco/rolling stock to 'jump' the point and proceed along the other direction.
5) Peco's insulated frog switches are insulated with plastic, but the tops of the insulation are covered with a strip of metal to enhance detail and realism. Atlas' insulated frog switches do not have this metal. Instead, the frog is painted brown like the ties, which decreases the realism. Also to add to the frogs, locos tend to run smoother over Peco frogs, while they tend to jolt and stall on Atlas frogs.

As I stated above, Peco is actually a very good brand of track, and it has its benefits. If you live in the UK, I'd go with Peco as it is easily available to you. If you live in the US, I'd suggest you buy Atlas as it's the cheaper of the two brands and it still gets the job done with very nice quality.
As for DCC, it's really not too complicated once the decoders are installed in the locomotives. Here's a video tutorial on how to install a decoder in Thomas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDSbVQgVfec. Installing chips in the other Thomas brand locos should be very similar if not the same.
If you're not going for DCC and you want to be able to control when each section is powered, you'd have to go with block wiring as jward said above. Block wiring is okay on small layouts, but if you have a big layout with loads of isolated sections, you may just want to spend the money and go DCC. I, of course, didn't listen to my own advice just given, and I went the block wiring route. I have about 30 'blocks' on my layout, and I can't even tell you how many holes I had to drill, how much soldering I had to do, and how much wiring is beneath my 10x10 layout. To clear things up about soldering, it's actually pretty simple. All you need is a soldering iron and rosin core. I purchased a handheld, plug-in soldering iron from Lowes hardware for $30.00. This is the exact one: http://www.lowes.com/pd_357336-273-WPS18MP_4294772306__?productId=3402986&Ntt=soldering+iron+tips&pl=1¤tURL=%3FNtt%3Dsoldering%2Biron%2Btips&facetInfo=. There should be plenty of tutorials on YouTube on how to solder wire to rails.
I hope that all helps!

This is how it's looking so far, it's roughly 4x6. *Silly questions alert* when the track has been soldered, will it provide power to the entire layout? Or only a certain part of the layout? how many transformers would you reccomend for a layout of this size? Again sorry for the sort-of silly questions, this is my first time building an ACTUAL layout. Thank you jward and ThomasFan247 for the info. ThomasFan247 your layout is fantastic by the way, and yes I live in the U.S so atlas is my best bet for now.
One thing I noticed about your plan is that even though it is in an 'L' shape, it's only 4'x6'. I would advise that you make the layout larger than that. The reason being that since in some areas you'll be looking at some severely sharp corners. This isn't too much of a problem if you're running small tank engines and 4-wheeled stock, but if you plan on running big engines like Gordon, you'll need to make each "leg" of the layout 4ft wide at least

Yes the whole layout will be powered, but you will choose when each part is powered. I don't think me explaining it will do you justice, so here's a diagram:
Using the Atlas selector, you can either use one or two transformers. The diagram shows that two are used, but I only use one for each main line, at least for now. For your layout, I'd suggest using one unless you want to operate multiple locos independently at the same time.
Thank you very much for the comments! There are no silly questions here, and we're happy to help you out :)

Very good Layout DinoNtrains, the sheds and knapford look wonderful. Merry christmas to everyone and a happy new year as well :D .
Wow! How big is that layout?
ThomasFan2013, my layout uses two 4x8's made into a "T". Plus, there is a small wedge at the right corner, as shown in the last photo you shared there :) Now I forgot, do you have a layout shown on this thread?

I know that there are body kits available for most of the talyllyn engines to run on N scale track. These could be adapted into the Skarloey engines easily but the only problem is that the don't come with chassis and you have to buy them separately.
Here's a short video showcasing the final section of the layout: Tidmouth. Hope you enjoy this RWS-based location :)

WOW just WOW. Words do not begin to describe the sheer awesomeness of that layout, I see that a lot of work must have gone into it, and you should be very pleased with the result :).
And since my profile picture is of Vegeta:
The awesomeness level is over nine THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAND!
Thank you very much! Very glad you enjoyed it ;D
Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't been posting pics of my layout for months :P I've had a rather busy summer. So anyway, here are some pics I took today:
You'll see white Styrofoam track risers under the outside tracks. They're making my hill/mountain for my layout. I'm actually going to get a couple more sets of them and make a second incline for the inside track.
Due to the track risers protruding outwards, I moved Strickland Propane to the inside loop.
Here's Percy trying out the hill. He made it up the hill well, and even did so with a train of four Troublesome Trucks and a Brakevan.
Now here's Thomas with Annie and Clarabel. If you're wondering why there's a big gap between the risers, it's because I'm going to place another bridge there (like the truss bridge in the inner loop).
See the curved turnout near the bottom of the photo? It will lead to some sidings. I was initially going to place in a quarry or mine, but recently, I changed my mind. I now want to make it a yard.
So what do you think? And about the track risers in awkward places (as in not connected correctly), that's only because I just put them on to test them out. When my dad and I start work on that end of the layout, we'll make sure they're in correctly.
I am planning a new layout that is based from plans from an old MR, it's a small logging layout ( but not Misty Island ) that I'll take to expositions and run, so it'll be small, I will try to post photos when building it though, so keep an eye out. ;)
BTW DinoNTrains, Your layout looks amazing, great job! :)
Thank you sodorfan! :)
A minor bump for this thread, my new 4x8 layout in the works.
This layout plan consists of Dryaw Station, and a goods yard seen in "Percy, James and the Fruitful Day."
I'll be posting updates on the layout on my blog at http://sodorblog.blogspot.com/, which is where I'll also post and archive simple, easy-to-do Thomas themed layout plans.
Coming along nicely, and great idea with the blog! Just a question, what is the Nissen Hut?
A Nissen Hut is a steel building in the shape of a half cylinder, in other words an airplane hanger. I'm assuming for Dryaw Airfield :) very nice.
This is the Nissen Hut I'm using for Dryaw. Some appear on its set throughout the seasons. They're basically storage sheds.
Harold has his own hangar, separately.
Oh, wow! I never knew what they were called, but they look just like the ones in the series. Any plans to paint them?
No plans to re-paint it, since they're already a dark green.
For reference, this is about how big they are. They're also seen in some quarry and farm sets (such as McColl).
I'm also open to requests for layout plans, for anyone struggling to make a layout of their own. Just give me the dimensions and the general idea of scenes you want on the layout. I feel like messing around in Anyrail.
My mom has me putting my layout on the floor Which has pros and cons 1 pro is I have more space 1 con is I could or anybody could trample it so I am not doing any scenery or very many buildings for a while oh well it may still look cool at least until I get a space for my railroad to be permanent
I've been thinking about redoing the layout. Instead of the two 4x8 tables together with the 4x4 coming off of it, maybe configure them into a "U" shape. This will allow the engines to have a longer run and i can get to every part of the layout easier. I'll still keep the same locations (Brendam, Great Waterton, and Tidmouth), and hopefully i can fit in an extra yard for the carriages.
Oh and I had ordered Duck last week and he came yesterday! ;D I'm pleased with how he turned out!
Have fun with that of course afterwards send pictures to show us how it turned out
Hey there! Sorry for a lack of updates, but today my dad and I have done some work on my layout.
We've glued down the Styrofoam inclines on both sides. We even cut some of the inclines to accommodate my black truss bridge on the inside track. (I got a silver one just a few days ago, and that will go on the outside track.)

I need help. I want the layout to look just like the TV show, having spots like the quarry, Tidmouth Sheds, Knapford, the docks, maybe some stations or fields. The layout may be 4 x 8 or larger depending on where I build it. If it's easy to change the layout for every remake, I can do that. Thanks if you reply!
Hey! It's great that you want to model Sodor. The best thing to do is probably find the maximum space you can use first, then start. I would suggest making the quarry and the docks one set that is easy to change around. Since there are many sidings, sheds and extra tracks, that would probably be the easiest thing to do.
Here's just a pic of what I did on my layout today

The two tables were separated so as to work on the mountain/hill, but my dad and I pushed them back together for a purpose. This Saturday is my birthday, and I want to run my trains for my friends :)
Wow! Looks really cool. Have a happy birthday too! :)
I will be posting pics of my current 4x7 layout soon.
Thank you, ThunderbirdComics :) And I look forward to seeing pics of your layout
EDIT: Yesterday was my birthday, and for that occasion, I got another coal wagon w/ load and Bachmann Edward! He's awesome! :D
(https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/560072_10200413606177367_1036169752_n.jpg)
P.S. As you can see, I also got an Amtrak diesel from KATO. It was a gift from my grandma
The bachmann Edward is a great model, best in the range. And it looks like the layout is coming along nicely too! ;D
Thank you very much, sodorfan! :)

At least you have started your layout :I I haven't even started ._.
After a long time w/out updates to the layout, here are a few:
I glued down the other track risers, so they are now in place.
To keep the tracks on the risers, I nailed them down to the risers.

Here you go, and Merry Christmas one and all! :D
EDIT: Here's what my parents got me last night on Christmas Eve: Bachmann Donald and Douglas!

Nice!....Oh great, now I'm really jealous ;).
lol I hope you had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year :)
Here's an update of my layout. Questions are welcome

My local store is currently out of PECO switches, but I'll be getting more soon.
Nice layout, Sparks :)
Any one have any luck on bending track for a incline quarry?
I think your best bet would be just to get track risers (like the ones on my layout) and use flex-track
EDIT: As of April 28th, here are some updates.
I have now completed my sidings.
Now, here is a turnout pointing inwards, ending in a siding (as Percy and his train are demonstrating). There will be a town in this area, too.
And last but not least, I have completed the inner track on the incline. I may still have to work out bumps and the like.

Thoughts? Let me know :)
Well I have decided my layout and am trying to get the wood so I can start the Bench work but I still have yet to buy Thomas and friends trains and I have yet to get a list together, but I have a single question to ask is buying Tidmouth sheds worth the 200 dollars it would take to buy it or should I just do something else
I got an idea for a turnaround loop, it could go around tidmouth sheds make it look like that line in season 1.
Do you think I should do that?

Personally, I would say no on that. While Tidmouth Sheds is nice, (I do not own it though!) It doesn't seem too great. You could always build your own with wood/paper/paint etc. It's your decision to make.
I got another train set in the mail today and it was an older Bachmann not Thomas obviously so I now have 4 engines one is broken so I have to fix it and it is going to run on another layout so I might get Thomas Annie and Clarabel just because however I am making a custom one with the Turntable that Bachmann Produces.
I've made a few more advances on my layout.
I rearranged the sidings as I felt the original set-up looked cramped:

Also, I have set down these gray sheets that will be the foundation of the town behind Tidmouth Sheds

Well, I didn't mean the kit itself, what I mean't is it could be fit inside a turnaround loop nicely (although, come to think of it, I'd like to see someone scratch build the sheds) ::)
My Layout is named after a fictional place and isn't used on any shows, books, or movies so I might just do a lot of customs
Any pictures, Rollin Mayham?
Also, the other night I got Bachmann Toby and Duck as gifts for graduating high school

CONGRATS!!!
College??
Yes sir!
ah yes. high schools is ending for me as well. have had some plans to do some serious modeling this summer!
Sheesh. I wish I could hurry up and Graduate! I'm in grade 11...so one more year to go. Grade 12 should be fun, trying to balance work at Thrifty's with my studies.
And, does anyone have ideas for a layout in a very small space? I have all the things I'd need to build a layout, I just need to figure out how it will happen....
College is not exactly better than high school as far as the workload goes. I made the mistake of taking 16 credits this quarter at my school and it is limiting my free time, which includes layout work. ::)
Anyways I recently got a bandai model of George the Steamroller from Japan. I'll be more than happy to share some photos of the model as well as the layout in general. I have not had much time to do any layout work, but I will get around to it soon, since I've been meaning to share layout photos with everyone for some time now.
Chaz: Does Bandai George fit well on an HO layout?
The model fits pretty well for a Thomas and Friends layout and would look good next to Bachmann models. I don't necessarily model Sodor (despite collecting Bachmann models), since I'm more of an American modeler. I recommend it, but be warned that prices for these and other models in the range are expensive (like around 30-60 dollars), so know what you are getting into before purchasing. George is the second one I have so far, and I already have Trevor. I plan on getting Bulgy and stopping there just because I do not have a desire for other road characters since Bachmann already made the ones I wanted. I'll show some pictures as a sample for what's to come, while showing off George.

I apologize for any blurriness, since I took these pictures on my phone. But I will show take and upload more pictures once school is out for the summer.
the photos are fine. the lighting is good, and you've resisted the temptation to use the flash. flash photos of models never turn out well.

Sorry for quoting such an old post :(, but do you recall how you scratch constructed these, ThomasFan247? I find the scratch built fences and buffers to look quite nice :).
Well, to me the buffer looks like being made of ties from the tracks, and the fence maybe just some wooden sticks ???

I agree with Chaz. Having graduated with my Bachelors myself, I participated in the marching band, worked as a RA, and took 14 hours a semester. It does make you value your time you have to your trains. That being said, college allows you freedom in your time. I knew some who scheduled their classes only on Tuesday and Thursday.

I have built a layout when I lived in a small apartment. It was only four feet long and two feet wide. If you are looking for small in HO scale, a shunting layout is good. I modelled N scale too for a year, but it was too tiny for my taste.
Here are some pics of the layout.

Also modular layouts are good too. My current one splits into two so I can transport it.
Nice layout! :)

A few more updates on my layout.
I have glued those grey sheets for my town. The water tower in the middle will be the centerpiece of the town.

Good news! My dad and I agreed to start the bench work for our new layout tomorrow! ;D ;D ;D ;D
Since I have a good amount of snow in my neck of the woods, its probably a good time to decorate the layout for Christmas. :D
So tomorrow I am going back to Alabama and living their with my dad and I can't take my train stuff with me. So I will be restarting all over and getting a Thomas and friends set while building a small layout in my room.
So we've put up the first bits of benchwork, and now moving on to reprinting the backdrop (it had too dark a blue) so now we move on to the [dun dun dun!] MOVING THE CLUTTER!
Just posted to this thread, but now the "next" button goes to the next thread,
not next page i the layout thread like it did before.
Gosh, all of you guys have amazing layouts, And I have leftovers from a layout dismantled years ago. :-[
You guys have any suggestions on what to do for a new layout?
Ehh my HO layout is just a long oval, same with my G scale. I like collecting the new items most of all anyway.
I do have a lot of trackside accessories like the old water tower and resin stuff though. They're fun to collect too!
I just wish there was a local store that sells this stuff--I get everything from Towerhobbies since model railroading isn't very big in Maryland :/
Sorry to bring this zombie thread back to life but can you guys post photos of your layouts? I am starting a new layout for my boy and would love to get some inspiration?
