Large / Re: 3 Truck Shay with DCC
January 22, 2021, 07:36:56 PM
A couple of thoughts.

1) The climax decoder is an entirely different decoder then the 3 truck shay decoder and has many different features.

2) From your email let me guess.  You have an NCE system.  With NCE address 003 is a long address while 3 is a short address.   When you reset the decoder it went to address 3, the short address.  You reporgrammed it to address 003 which is a long address and now it works when you enter 003 on the handheld.

3) I suspect when you did a factory reset of the decoder you reset many of the CVs that were set for the 3 truck shay to the decoder factory setting and not to the settings for the 3 truck shay.

https://soundtraxx.com/content/Reference/Factory-Installed/Bachmann/Spectrum/fn3_3_truck_shay.pdf

The above URL lists the default CVs for this locomotive.  Find the ones that are different and reset them to these values and it should work as you expect.

I would start with CVs 33 - 46

Hope that helps

Don

I emailed you an Accucraft K-37 manual which has its wiring diagrams.

If this does not match your loco then it is likely a Berlyn locomitive.  If so you should ask your question on the One20point3 groups.io  list

Hope this helps

Thanks Stan
Right now I have the "new" trucks with 2 wires  (1 rd & 1 blk) to the coal bunker. There are 4 contacts on each truck with the above 2 wires. To get 4 wires do I add wires to the 2 remaining contacts, and run them back to bunker to connect to decoder?

Correct.

Just make sure that you check to ensure which contacts are track and which are the motor.

Also make sure you remove the connection on the connection plate that connects the track to the motor.  (The red wire corrently goes to 2 contacts and the black wire to the other trwo contacts  each of the 4 wires should only go to one contact)

When done be sure you use an ohm meter to ensure that you have it wired properly.

Stan

PS  When I did this on mine I used a larger gauge wire and replaced the two esisting wires while I was at it.

Thx for reply. Both my soundtrack instructions & NCE instructions say to be sure motor & lights are isolated from frame. My only question is do I have to isolate anything on my Shay with the replacement motor units #88999.
Any info is greatly appreciated
Jim

Yes and No.

The new metal trucks have the motors isolated from the track and provide 4 contacts at the top of the truck.

The 38 ton 2 truck shay has 4 wires going to the truck mounting plates so the motors are isolated and there are instructions on how to easily wire them for DCC
https://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/dwg/dwgs/LARGE_SCALE_38-TON_2-TRUCK_SHAY.pdf

For the older 36 ton 2 truck shay there are only 2 wires going from the locomotive to the truck mounting.  To make these locomotives DCC ready you need to run two additional wires from the truck mounting to the coal bunker and use the new metal trucks.

Hope that helps

Let me try to provide some factual information.

The US has a a national electrtical code which clasifies low voltage as less then 50 volts.  From a model railroad perspective this number sould be divided in half because of our reverse loops.

The Europeal CE child safely rerquirements are a lot tighter.  They clasify model trains as toys and have very strict safety rules for toys. For example the high voltage power supply can no longer be in a model train controller and instead must be in a seperate sealed container.

Low amperage at high voltage can be very dangerous and lethal.  Low voltage is viewed as being safe.

For example I run 10 amps at 21.5 volts on our railroad.  If it is a very wet day and you tough both rails you may get a a tingle but you can hold both rails tightly and not the current you draw is neglegable.

Be safe.  Keep your high voltage power supplies protected and away from people.    Only use UL and/or CE certified model railroad electronics.(they will have the actual UL and/or CE logos on the units).    If you want to play extra safe in a public environment keep the  high voltage power supplies seperate from the controllers.

A model railroad product will not get a UL safety or a CE safety logo if it is not safe for children.

Based on Greg's suggestion perhaps calling this version a Barry would be appropriate

Large / Re: Spring for Climax track pickup plunger
March 05, 2020, 07:25:08 PM
I have been doing a spring upgrade on some other locos and likely have some if you need them.

I buy springs at two sources but unfortunately they are very expensive in small quantities.

Send me an email if you still need them.

Hi Stan;
Now that you mention it, yes it was my two Murphy roof boxcars.  As a precaution, I went ahead and also replaced the trucks on my spectrum caboose.  Are the trucks alright on the earlier boxcars and the caboose?
Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck

The only cars I have ever had a problem with are some of the Murphy Roof boxcars.  For example, I had a tank car hit the floor last week and while several of the wheels were damaged the trucks are fine.  We are had on our cars and over time things do break but only the problem Murphy Roof cars have had issues.

As an aside if you still have your caboose trucks you removed I would be very interested in acquiring them.

Rob, I also had the trucks disintegrate on two of my Spectrum boxcars.  The Spectrum freight cars and caboose are, in my opinion, the most accurate and best looking of any scale.  Unfortunately, it appears the trucks are made from what's known as "pot metal".  I replaced the trucks with Bachmann Big Hauler boxcar trucks I happened to have extra. They work fine, just don't look as good.

Chuck

Just to clarify, have you had a problem with any Spectrum freight car models other then the Murphy Roof Box cars?

I ask because I have a large number of Bachmann 1:20.3 cars and it is only one batch of Murphy Roof cars that I have ever had a problem with.  I have never has a broken truck or step on any of the other cars.

When Bachmann replaces a truck for the Murphy Roof cars they normally also provide a bolster.

It is not difficult to replace a bolster.

Unscrew the 4 screws that screw the bolsters to the box car

Unscrew the couplers.

You should now be able to remove  the cars underframe.

for the end with the damaged bolster remove the screws at the end of the underframe and slide off the end piece and  the broken bolster.

now slide in the replacement bolster.  I have found that one hole for the various rods on some of them has some flash and that hole may require you to drill the hole completely through the bolster.

Replace the end piece and screw in the end piece you removed above.

Place the underframe back in the car ensure that the brake end lines up properly.

re screw the bolster back into the car and the couplers back on.

Hope that helps.

Large / Re: Sound on a 2-6-6-2 Mallet tank loco 1:20.3

Greg

All Bachmann Spectrum locomotives post the K27 have the required electronics to connect directly to all the popular sound boards chuff inputs.

The 2-6-6-2 has two chuff outputs. One for the front engine and one for the rear  Of you only want 4 chuffs per revolution only connect one of the outputs to the sound board.  If your board has 2 chuff inputs you can connect one output to each input and get two sets of 4 chuffs that are out of phase

It is fairly easy to hook up the phoenix sound board to a 2-6-6-2.

Connect the 1st chuff input to the locomotive Chuff Trigger 1 (J1 pin 5)  and the phoenix chuff ground to the locomotive ground (J1 pin 7)

If you want a cool effect  have a function output on your control board power a relay that is connected to the phoenix second chuff trigger and the locomotive Chuff Trigger 2 (J2 pin 2)

Note the locomotive connections on on solder pins on the side of the board.

The 2-6-6-2 is a compound mallet. This means that the steam exhaust from one set of cylinders is fed to the input of the second set of cylinders which is then exhausted up the stack.  This provided 4 chuffs per wheel revolution.

To gain maximum tractive effort the engineer can switch from compound mode to simple mode on startup.  Normally simple mode is used below 5 mph and compound mode above 7 mph.  Simple mode will provide 4 chuffs from the rear engine and 4 chuffs from the front engine going into and out of sync

Using the relay for the second chuff imput allows you to simulate this effect.

Hope this helps

Each box has 50 1 ft tie strips

If you search on-line for "Bachmann 94647", you will find several dealers offering them at discount.

We use them on our Garden Railroad and like them a lot.

First, will the Bachmann replacement ties fit the Aristocraft brass track?  Second, how does it compare in terms of lookand durability.  I'm moving my layout as we downsize and retire and when I pulled up the Aristo track, the ties were in horrible shape.

Mickey

The Bachmann ties are fantastic.  I have replace large sections of our railroad with them and they work fine.  The UV protection is much better and they have help up very well.

For curved sections I simply cut the web between ties every 2nd or 3rd side alternating between sides.

Hope that helps

Large / Re: Forney 80998 DCC Installation
April 10, 2019, 05:21:56 PM
There are currently three choices.

1) Bachmann has a sound motor plug in decoder for the Climax that will also work in the Forney.

2) Zimo has a sound motor decoder and a wide variety of suitable sounds that will plug into the Forney.

3) Phoenixhas a sound motor decoder and a wide variety of suitable sounds that will plug into the Forney.

You can also use many other sound motor decoders with screw terminals using the plug in adapter with wires that came with your Forney.

Hope that helps.
