On30 / Re: Hand Stamps for Custom Lettering
September 23, 2011, 09:49:01 AM
Having a collection of older Lionel, alot of these were rubber stamped, some heat stamped. Its quite obvious they had the same problems with the amount of paint on the stamp, some are heavy some light, few if any are perfect!Ive tried rubber stamps also,I used colored Sharpie markers instead of an ink or paint pad, just rub it over the lettering on the stamp.Again not perfect but a little weathering and nobody knows.Unfortunatly to my knowledge Sharpie does not make markers in white, others make paint pens in white which might work,I find them a bit sloppy or is that just me!

You can bury the ties all you want it still dosent look right, ties are too short and too close together.Friend of mine uses Ho track for On30,he removes every other tie,it does look better! Peco track to me isnt good either, unless your building a huge layout or just cant afford it go with Micro Engineering track, its perfect and they make switches to match!

Try this,I took an old peice of HO flex track and just kept bending it into a tighter circle,I also removed the limit pin,I didnt take measurements but it was a really tight circle and the Porter just chugged along, made me goofy watching it go,no maybe that was the beverage!

Thanks Doneldon,I guess in plain words Im chicken, its way too much money to put out on a hunch it will work.I had a long talk with my customer and he once again told me he didnt need DCC or sound but reall wanted me to try this conversion for him.Ive done 4 different On30 Shays for him,so far so good.So I went hunting on Ebay,I stumbled on a new in the box Roundhouse RTR Shay,I again talked to my guy and we both decided for 95 bucks it was worth a shot!I have no idea how well these run,Ill soon find out cause its on its way!

Thanks 2foot6,I dont know about you but I know and Bachman knows they have problems with gears in other locos too.For the cost of locos I dont think we should have to repair it ourselves or 3 days after buying it have to return it for repair and hope its repaired FREE!I dont abuse my locos either,I didnt have a chance with this one it was SHOT right out of the box! OK Bach Man how about your side of the story!

Everytime I open a new bottle I drop in 2 small machine scews or nuts or BBs,same as the ball in spray cans,as you shake it helps mix the paint,I havent had bubble issues YET!

If you dont drink you will by the time your done trying to power from overhead!I consider myself pretty good at what I do,my hat is off to those who have accomplised this feat! I on the other hand decided after hours of defeat, decided to cheat I did it with a Lionel GG1(3rail) I just ran the wires above to look halfway decent but still powered it through the rails, very few ever noticed.

I agree 100%.I recently converted a Bachman ON30 Shay to a Mich Cal,the hardest part was getting the headlight on the side AND working.I used a brass On3 as my guide.Although not an excact replica it came out pretty good. The boiler was the problem,it was much larger than the brass one.At this point nobody has answered my Question,is their electronics or the speaker in the rear tender on Bachmans Ho Shay or Climax? The customer is not all that concerened about DCC or sound which is leading me away from a Bachman unit because of price,I can maybe pick up a Ho scale brass Shay cheaper if I watch for one.

Thanks,Im a custom builder, customer wants a smaller version of a Shay instead of the full size ON30 version,I think with a few minor changes it could be a SWEET little loco.I just gotta get some answers beforw I jump in with both feet.
