I've got the deck and main body cut out now but still need to square things up and cut out the nose pieces...it's a start.

My only LHS is either Hobby Lobby or Hobbytown USA...neither of which carry much though HTusa carries HO but will never wind up carrying anything in On30...luckily I have the internet{or I wouldn't be here!-lol}

They have a page?  I cannot find it by searching on bachmann or on trains.

...try under "bachmann trains"-

I may have to check that out too if there's an O scale section...still looking for the "motor and metal drive tires" accessory kit for my old AHM/Riv O scale Indiana Harbor belt 0-8-0 switcher kit...not holding my breath on that find though.   ;D

Alright, my son and I have decided last night to just start this off with the drawn up plans as posted above.
I bought a dcc on board SD40-2 last night for another bash when I'm done here. "TFS" on ebay- $45 BIN and only $33 after my aquired ebay bucks were applied- I had to do it...anyway, with that one I want to try a version of that UM10B but it'll have C trucks and be a tad longer.{wouldn't that make it a UM10C then?}

Still haven't totally nailed down a replacement dcc sound board for the current project, but it'll most likely be one of the TSU-1000 boards that has the optional ditch/mars lights - I'm thinking about either ditch lights or do the end and cab side by side lights as alternating flash. Speaker and enclosure will no doubt be in the top of the main body somewhere behind the cab...time to grab a sheet of .040 and start cutting the main body pieces.

I'll post progress pics for those who wish to see the build and for anyone elses amusement.

I can't wait to get some of these to pull behind the forney I bashed into a 2-4-0.

Thanks for posting the pic's

Absolutely no problem - how about posting pics on site of that 2-4-0 conversion...or did I miss it?
Now to head over to my table and start cutting sheet stock for my On30 diesel bash...

January 07, 2013, 09:30:32 AM
Ah- hah, thank you for that Bill....I have the CM Co 2-6-6-2 w/sound so I only have that to go by. Interesting they have a plug for the 2-4-4-2 and not the 2-6-6-2....guess it's like the Ho version diesels that have dcc on board - no plug for adding just sound on those.

If your talking Bachmann themselves, they do have an FB page....if your talking anyone in general who runs Bachmann trains....that could be a whole different story - honestly never searched for that. I can tell you it/they probably exist since I actually found a flathead 6 group and if one can find that, Im sure there's more out there in the way of trains...try searching model trains, On30, HO, or whatever your into.

On30 / Re: Another 2-6-6-2 question
January 06, 2013, 11:40:13 AM
Hmmm, I'd/we'd need some clarification here I guess- "both" the 2-4-4-2 and the 2-6-6-2 are offered in dcc while the 2-4-4-2 has an optional sound board - the 2-4-4-2 has a "sound only option" that just a plug and play...doesn't the "dcc/only 2-6-6-2" have the same plug in option...does it have a plug for adding sound as well like the 2-4-4-2 or would the 2-6-6-2 require a full on dcc/sound board swap to get sound if it didn't origonaly come with it?
Not nagging here....simply curious...and this may help others in the future....I guess were sitting here thinking both engines are, or should be, the same in the way of sound plug options...

On30 / Re: Help with 2-4-4-2 ON-30
January 05, 2013, 03:42:19 PM
Phoffer, any updates? I forgot to ask you before...is that an oem dcc you have or an aftermarket? Reason I ask is that some of the aftermarket dcc/sound boards have a mars light and ditch light wiring option...oem bachmann doesn't.
I have the 2-6-6-2 w/ dcc & sound, and while it's not eacatly the same drivers as yours I can compare since it's close enough...

I'd like to see the On30 davenport return and maybe another type of gas or diesel rendition of sorts....go ahead and bring out that heisler, but think heavily about a 3 or 4 truck shay too...at least a 3 truck!
Next...hey, why not...add some snow clearing devices- flanger/plow/rotary/jorden - and some more revenue cars....

...RK-D, search the web and/or ebay....ebay model trains has it's own class for us - "On30" and it's thick with bachmann goodies...I also second the good experiences with ebay seller "the favorite spot", I bought a pair of the new shorty boxcars just before Christmas and received them just afterwards. I posted a few pics of them in the "shorty wagon" thread.

Did alot of research yesterday and am coming to the conclusion that an outrite swap of the dcc for a sound/dcc board is the only way to go...mostly due to the possible programming issues with 2 boards-oem dcc CVs and the intended sound board CVs. I did find "sound only" boards, but after a few..and there aren't many...web blogs that stated preprogramming before installation would be best...I'm headed in the full swap direction...probably a TSU-1000 diesel sound board with the optional ditch lights...that would be cool. Add that there are some boards out there that are 1st program dominant and non permanent, meaning if the main/1st sound program is steam and your wanting the diesel sound, every time you programm that engine and then take it off the track, it'll go back to it's dominant program which might not be the one you wanted.
It's killing me here...somewhere I have the MR article about the value sound bachmann and I now want to try to see if there's a shot of it's sound board in order to compare it to my "dcc only" board...just for laughs, but I can't find my dang mag...nope, it's not on my head with my glasses...good thing to know where my glasses are now!

On30 / Re: Another 2-6-6-2 question
January 05, 2013, 10:25:43 AM
In theory, I don't see why not...while the 2-4-4-2 would be a milder steam sound due to the lessor wheel assembly and supposedly smaller cylinders...if you over thought it....than the 2-6-6-2, they are both the same dual cylinder sound...so in theory- yes, it should be fine. All that is questioned is the plug.

Hey, no problem with the pics. I'm really thinking about one of BVM's work cars for a rotary...there's a nice litle snow plow bash someone showed one of BVM's outside braced boxcars....I like that too!

Rich-

I suppose I should thank you for supplying this post but right now I'm irritated with you. I just spent over an
hour going through several of the projects on this site. I'm not saying wasted because the articles are terrific
reading. But you sure helped me spend some time that my wife would have preferred be spent taking down
the Christmas tree.

Serious, thank you for giving us this resource. Not only is it interesting reading, I will supply me with project
how-tos for a long time.

Yup, took me about the same time frame but I'm unhappy because the lazy susan layout vid wouldn't load for me...that looks interesting...the layout moves and the train stays still...really interesting idea.
My wife is the same way but my two kids say otherwise mostly because the boy doesn't want his tree train removed.
Seems nobody has the emoticon that gives the raspberries...that "tongue" one just isn't the same thing.... ;)
